I originally posted a 5 star review for this place 2 years ago but Google won't let me re-review this restaurant so I have to just edit my post and downgrade my rating.
I have been a patron of this restaurant for years - takeout dinners, I bring my overseas guests here, I recommend it to my friends but after today's visit, I won't be back.
You will likely eat here anyway and you may still have a great/decent experience. My take away from today is "don't get put in the basement". They reserve it for guests they want to forget. I waited half an hour for one dish of 10 dim sim dishes that I ordered. And when the next dish, congee, came without the fried dough sticks (they are usually paired together), I complained and then all my dishes came within 20 minutes.
Which would have been fine except that while the speed of service improved (likely as it was now after 2:30pm and half of the upstairs patrons and all the tables next to us in the basement had paid and left) , the food came down subpar.
My BBQ buns were undercooked, my fried dough sticks were dripping in oil, my pork dumplings were inedible, my spring rolls were burnt. I could go on but I won't.
There is no music in the basement so eating sad food in complete silence makes the food taste even worse.
I have only given 1 star reviews twice in my life. I'm the person who always gives 5 star reviews to my uber drivers and a tip. I think this restaurant will still do great food sometimes but word of caution, if they ask you to sit in the basement, politely decline and leave, lest you be the next person to write a...
Read moreThe servers were slower than a 1-legged turtle, but they were still faster than the kitchen. We waited in total an hour and 40 minutes for an appetizer and a soup course. This is a disgrace of a restaurant. They couldn't pay me to eat here again.
The steamed chicken we got hardly had any meat on it. The sweet and sour pork, were tiny cubes of pork with an overwhelming amount of batter. The szechuan style pork was the remainder of the pork chop that wasn't in the sweet in sour pork ... in what dining world is it ok to serve a piece of top fat off the pork chop? I could go on.
So I shall, they didn't bring white rice to the table until we reminded them (twice). They had to be asked to refill the tea pots - despite the lid being opened for 15 minutes. They served a duck bones and noodle dish that was completely not appetizing to look at, and equally inedible. The taro root tapioca dessert was fittingly the worst course to finish off the night. There were clumps of tapioca stuck together, the dish didn't taste of any taro at all, and it was type II diabetes sweet. My pancreas is about to give up.
I would actually rather eat at a Vanier diner than eat here again. I've had better food in a funeral home than here. If you read my other reviews of restaurants, you'll know that I'm not deliberately harsh. I have a passion for food, and this place is the complete antithesis of it. The food lacks imagination, lacks harmony in it's flavors, and the servers may want to reconsider their choice of profession, cause they're...
Read moreAfter hearing many positive reviews, both online and offline. My family really wanted Chinese food and we decided to try this spot out for lunch as it's supposed to be one of the best spots in town. It turned out to be a huge mistake, the food was pretty bad.
The soup noodle dish was watered down and lacked any specific points of flavour, it was closer to water than tasting like anything in particular. The stir-fried flat noodles with beef had no wok hei, and I'm fairly certain it was just steamed and tossed with some soy sauce rather than stir-fried due to the colour and mushy consistency. The eggplant with vegetables from their recommended menu was way too salty with undercooked potatoes and unbalanced flavours. The salt and pepper squid was the only dish that was somewhat good, seasoned well but the portion size was really small for $20.
For the prices, the portion sizes for most of the dishes were either tiny, or the flavours did not justify the cost. I think it would be fantastic if their cooks tasted the food before putting it out. Other reviews seem to echo the same points, it does not live up to the hype or reputation whatsoever. In comparison, I would say mall court Chinese spots are significantly better from a taste perspective alone...
Overall, the tea ended up being the highlight of the meal. Service was pretty inattentive, and the younger waiter/waitresses who came by weren't exactly friendly either. We left with a large bill, small portions and a...
