Rarely am I so impressed by a restaurant.
This place has only been open since October in a tiny strip mall off the beaten path through Bell's Corners. Google and Bing sometimes have trouble finding it, even with the address. It's at the intersection of Robertson and Stinson, beside Dan's Automotive.
We went tonight on a whim for some Thai, and I'm glad we did.
We started with fried fish cakes and cucumber sauce. They were homemade and terrific. They were soft and pillowy, not at all rubbery, and didn't have an overpowering fish flavour. The cucumber dipping sauce was unexpected but it was both spicy and cooling at the same time.
It was followed by our salad and mains. We ordered a green papaya salad. It came loaded with peanuts and shrimp. The shrimp were steamed to perfection and were melt in your mouth delicious. The salad had just the right amount of heat.
We shared mains and both were portioned very generously. The Pad Thai noodles were not served spicy, but that's probably because it's the first choice for people when getting used to Thai food. The flavour was the right blend of slightly sweet and sour and I could see the little bits of tamarind used to flavour it- the real deal! The noodles were light and not at all greasy. It was a very filling dish for a cold day. Ask your server for some hot sauce made in house to spice things up. Our server insisted we try it.
We also had the richest red coconut chicken curry that I've ever had. It was loaded with strips of tender chicken and thick with coconut base. It was not overpoweringly spicy and it was worth every penny.
Even though it was listed as individual dishes, the food was served family style in giant portions. We took home leftovers.
The service was excellent and our server was super friendly. The food arrived very quickly and we weren't disappointed in the least. He saw that it was our first time at the restaurant and even gave my wife a beautiful elephant brooch.
I wish I could give this restaurant more than five stars. This is easily the best restaurant in Bell's Corners and certainly the best Thai in Ottawa that I've ever had, and even better than the Nokham Thai on Richmond Road which is usually very busy. We'll be back. Hopefully we will see you there- this new restaurant will need you in...
Read moreFour of us arrived here for early dinner at 5 pm. There were not many customers at this time and although there appeared to be only one server, the service was prompt and welcoming. We started with Tod Man or Thai fish cutlets (4 for $8) which were tiny and not very tasty. I would not order them again. (1/5).
The other four mains that we ordered were: Crispy marinated pork on a bed of vegetables- Mu Krop pad pak. This is the first time I have ordered this dish at a Thai restaurant and we all quite enjoyed it. I would rate it 4/5; Shrimp on fried rice- Khao Pad Shrimp. Although quite tasty, I would rather order a shrimp dish and rice separately next time as this was mostly some shrimp on a lot of rice. (3.5/5) Chicken and potatoes in a curry sauce- Gaeng garee gat - I am personally not a fan of potatoes or curry spices (Indian flavour ?) in a Thai curry but one of us really liked this dish. (4/5) Chicken in a red curry sauce- Pa nang. The chicken Pa nang was by far the best dish that day and I would certainly order it again (5/5).
We ordered two Jasmine rice and asked for refills but they appeared to have run out of Jasmine rice when we asked for refills. We were happy to settle for sticky rice instead.
The meal for four adults cost about $125 with tax included but excluding tip. We found the restaurant a little pricier than other comparable Thai restaurants in town. However easy parking and good service make up for this. I am sure we will...
Read moreMy husband and I took our two daughters for dinner last night, and it was unanimous - ALL four of us LOVED this place, the food, the service, everything about it! We were served by such a friendly man (I think he was the owner), and we thoroughly enjoyed his personality and friendliness. And the food?? Absolutely delicious! We loved everything we ordered, and I think it was the first time ever that we ate every single bit of what we ordered, we loved it so much, that we didn't need to take any home! My husband and I both ordered the Tom Kha soup with chicken, and agreed it was one of the best we ever had. One of our daughters ordered the spring rolls (#3 Poa Pia Pak) and a salmon dish, and she raved about both. We all tried the salmon dish and agreed, it was awesome! Our other daughter ordered the Satay skewers (#5) and a dish with crispy pork, which she also loved, and my husband and I tried the crispy pork and loved it too. I ordered a red curry dish (#39, Gaeng Daeng) with pork and I loved the flavor, and my husband ordered the green curry dish. There are so many other things we wanted to order on the menu that we have all agreed this visit will definitely not be out last! I really want to try the Thai salad. We can't wait to go back again! Thank you, Thai Flame, for such a delicious and wonderful dinner and evening! We look forward to coming back again...
