I recently had the pleasure of dining at Sou'Wester Gift & Restaurant in Peggy's Cove, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience. The restaurant not only offers breathtaking views of the iconic Peggy's Cove lighthouse but also serves the best lobster I have ever eaten.
From the moment I walked into Sou'Wester, I was greeted with warm hospitality and exceptional service. The staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. They made sure that every aspect of our dining experience was taken care of, from recommending dishes to ensuring our glasses were never empty.
Now, let's talk about the lobster. It was simply outstanding. The lobster at Sou'Wester is fresh, succulent, and cooked to perfection. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with every bite. Whether it was the classic lobster roll or a whole lobster, each dish showcased the high quality and expertise of the chefs. It's no wonder they are renowned for their lobster dishes.
Aside from the lobster, the menu at Sou'Wester offers a variety of other delicious seafood options. From scallops to clams to fish and chips, there is something to satisfy every seafood lover's palate. The meals are beautifully presented and bursting with flavor, showcasing the freshness of the ingredients.
The ambiance of Sou'Wester is another highlight of the dining experience. The restaurant is located right by the water, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the picturesque Peggy's Cove lighthouse. The cozy interior and nautical-themed decor create a charming and inviting atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a memorable meal.
In addition to the restaurant, Sou'Wester also has a gift shop where you can find a wide range of unique and locally made souvenirs. It's a great place to browse and pick up a memento to remember your visit to Peggy's Cove.
Overall, my experience at Sou'Wester Gift & Restaurant was nothing short of exceptional. The combination of the best lobster I have ever tasted, fantastic service, and the breathtaking location made it a truly memorable dining experience. If you find yourself in Peggy's Cove, I highly recommend stopping by Sou'Wester for a meal that will leave you craving their delicious seafood long after...
Read moreSo I visited the Sou'Wester twice during my visit to Nova Scotia. Both of my experiences were really nice, however - I have two separate food reviews based on the time of day that I went. I'm going to start with dinner.
It was a rainy evening at Peggy's Cove. I went inside to have a nice meal and the room felt dark. It wasn't very well lit. My server was fantastic and very friendly. I asked for a drink menu and decided on the Painted Boat Lager from Nova Scotia Spirits Co. It was cold and crisp! Very nice craft beer!
For dinner, I ordered the Lobster Roll. Menu price was $29.99. It came with slaw, and a healthy serving of fries. As for the roll itself? It was kind of embarrassing. I'll break it down real easy - cold hot dog bun. Not room temp, but removed from the fridge cold. Small bits of chopped lobster in a very light mayo (and by light I mean almost nothing) maybe some onions and a bit of seasoning. I would say two ice cream scoops in the center of the cold bun. For $29.99, it should have been an order of 3 rolls.
So if you're craving or want to try a famous Nova Scotia lobster roll for the first time, there are plenty of other spots around Peggy's Cove that offer them at a lower price, a warm or toasted bun with delicious creamy lobster salad!
Now! Second review is breakfast - I returned a couple of mornings later and ordered the largest of them all...The Captains Breakfast: 3 eggs, thick toast with home made apple jam (sauce), hash browns, 3 fish cakes, bacon and sausage! It paired beautifully with a hot fresh cup of coffee. I really enjoyed the breakfast while I sat at a window that faced the lighthouse. And the breakfast was only $20!!
Because the breakfast was really good, I'm giving the food 3 stars. Had it been a review with just the Lobster Roll, it would have been a solid 2 and that's only because the fries were quite good!
Afterwards, take a cruise through the gift shop! PLENTY of awesome little knick knacks to take...

The restaurant was not terribly busy (it's just the beginning of the season) and we were seated promptly.
The food is average-to-above average, but is seriously overpriced. However, it does support the local economy consisting of some 45 residents of Peggy's Cove.
Lobster Mac & Cheese was good although the Béchamel sauce began to break and became a little grainy.
The lobster butter was a little fishy tasting (moreover than lobster tasting). The lobster roll was at par with most other restaurants offering the same fare (and about $10 less).
Service was adequate, our hostess was from Cape Breton and pleasant to speak with.
It was an interesting experience to eat as the local seagulls were constantly peering in the windows....not annoyingly; just entertainingly.....I don't think feeding is endorsed, but I don't think they need help scavenging.
The drive to Peggy's Cove needs care........lots of twists & turns so be careful. Plenty of free parking right at the restaurant/Lighthouse/gift shop. Be wary of the ocean....the smooth rocks can be slippery and it would take little to be swept in by an unsuspected wave.......your odds of survival is...
