I found out about River Road Café through a friend who lives in Vancouver. Fate would have that the hotel where I was staying in Richmond for a stopover was located only a little over a kilometre away from River Road. As a Brazilian and already missing the flavors and tastes from Brazil I couldn't pass on the opportunity to check the place out.
The walk from the hotel to the restaurant was far from scenic and the restaurant's location isn't what someone would call it posh. But, all fears are immediately put aside as soon as you walk in and you're greeted by the nicest couple.
After a brief chat I decided to order a pastel (pastel de queijo/cheese pastel), a veggie cheeseburger and a guaraná (traditional Brazilian pop). For dessert I bought a couple of 'Sonho de Valsa' chocolates.
The food hit the spot and with each and every bite of the pastel and cheeseburger and with every sip of the guaraná, I was transported back to Brazil. After twenty four amazing years in Canada and having spent another twenty four years in Brazil, it was incredible to have this 'last meal' in Canada as I continue my pilgrimage across the world in search of my next home.
Thank you so much Leo and wife (desculpe que esqueci o seu nome!)! Wishing you both continued health and much success.

Read moreMy hubby and I drive truck. We eat at alot of different restaurants, cafés, food places ect. And we like to try new foods always. Actually we never get the same thing so we can try 2 new meals at 1 time. Well this was both our first time here..and our first Brazilian meal. We asked our questions and asked for suggestions...well the man who served us was the friendliest fellow ever. And answered all our questions and spoke about all the different menu items... And suggested a few choices. We accepted and really enjoyed every thing. Feijoada something...not being rude i dont speak Brazilian . but it was a black bean stew with white rice and kale on the side...i wasnt too sure at first but was it ever good me and my hubby shared that. And we had our own pastel, mine was beef and cheese and his was shrimp and both was very good. And we had a carmel type cherros mmm they were delish! As for atmosphere so friendly, and there was another lady that came in to eat and she was Brazilian and she spoke to us abit about the culture and foods and she has ..some cheese ball dough things..wow were they ever good. I wish i knew the names on how to say them in brazil. So i didnt sound ignorant.but i will definitely be back when in the area again. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS LITTLE CAFE. Thanks so much for...
Read moreCassava fries are tasty!
Came here and ordered the mini cheese Coxinhas and the Feijoada. We sat in for our meal which takes a bit of time as they make it fresh.
The staff was very friendly in explaining what was on the dish and how to eat what condiment with what. The few Cassava fries you get with the Feijoada were really delicious. They had just the right amount of sweetness … better than yam fries. They were really great in offering us if we needed extra rice or collared greens. I, personally, wasn’t a fan of the collared greens finding them bitter but that’s probably because I’m not used to them. The stew itself was delicious and you get plenty of it.
I’ve had Coxinhas before in the US and these were just as tasty. I prefer the mini size because I find them to be rich so the bite size makes it not such a heavy snack.
I would’ve gotten a Pastel but I just didn’t...
