So let's get the major slip ups out of the way:

  1. a piece of plastic was found in one of our bowls of pho, and
  2. the Vietnamese sub was made with day old bread.

Now, even with those major faux pas, how do I still rate it a 3 star? Read on:

Generally speaking, the cuisine is excellent and the offerings more comprehensive than other pho restaurants. On the former, the beef broth is very tasty with no MSG, the pho has tender cuts of protein and lots of it, the rice dishes also very tasty, spring rolls a perfect consistency of the innards, the chicken wings hot and crispy on the outside with no oily feel and tender and juicy on the inside, the sub (other than the aforementioned bread) lots of meat and delicious. On the latter, a seafood option for pho which is rare, and vermicelli and rice choices that are extensive.

Sure, the location is nothing to write home about being in a little run down strip mall amongst business and other one story shops. And the decor is pretty bland, akin to a truck stop or a mom and pop cafe. But I keep coming back to the food. Also, the lone girl running the front was quite adequate and worked hard to keep the clientele happy. As far as price point goes, a touch more expensive than other cheap pho restaurants but still a great deal when compared to restaurants in general. And we left with our stomachs well satisfied.

If the two slip ups mentioned at the beginning hadn't occurred, this would be a solid 4 star. As such, taking into account our entire experience an honest 3 stars is the result. I do look forward to...

It's the first time i am here. I got here at 11am for a early lunch. There were not many people since it just opened a few minutes ago. I ordered a rice dish, and also a deep fried spring roll. I was also craving for some soup too but, i prefer rice dish dince i been craving forvit ladt night, and i been eating too much noidle soup lately. When the food arrived, I was surprised by the amount of rice😃, but best thing of all and to my surprise, they included a clear soup to go with the rice😍😍😍😍, as if they read my mind. The owners are authentic, and so is the food. The spring roll was just right for my tongue, and it was not too oilly, and still crispy. The chicken too was nicely cook and flavored. Wish they add a slice of tomato to the salad would be nice. A bit too much green onion on the top, but it was really good to have the clear soup. A bit on the sweet side for after taste, it would be nice if it add few drop of lemon to it. Overall it was good service, i would give an extra half star but , the scale only have full star. Update: It has been 6 yrs since I came to this place, the food was still good and so is the spring roll. I guess what I missed was the soup that comes with the rice dishes that most other pho I have been doesn't provide. The Meat was good, my friend said she likes the pork chop, I wish for it to be a bit more salty, but with it light it still taste good , as light salt good for older people. If you are around Richmond home Depot , drop in to this little pho pass chevron gas station, next to...

The worst service i have ever experienced. They expect all customers are not Vietnamese and started talk badly behind them. Too bad for them one of the customers was me, i am Vietnamese. Too much of a hassle in the restaurant, brought the wrong bowls to two customers then picked it up in front of my face and swapped it?? I got it, no problem i havent touched it anyway, but at least a sorry would do?? Menu is too hard to read and process the price. Almost charge me the wrong price just because there were 2 customers having the same dish just different size?? They also overcharge you, a small bowl of Bun Bo Hue for $18 after tax. Hear me out, when i say small, it is small as hell, same size as a cereal bowl. Portion size and price are not properly set. How about instead of talk shit at the back, try to run the restaurant better! They also talk shit when I tipped them $0 ( as i said, i had a reason, i am not a cheap person, i always tip when the service is outstanding, this one’s horrible, tip money is for great service, not for shitty ones!!) No wonder there was no customer. A big no from me, i will never come back. You wouldn’t want negativity happening around you while enjoying your food. Bottom line: dont go eat here! Disgusting people with disgusting food and service and...

This is just my own opinion and please don’t let mine discourage you. There are competitive places to eat Vietnamese cuisine and each one of them has their own specialties or flare. The prices here at japolo are industry standard. I got number 20 large. The crab is imitation crab and I thought it was the crab patty. The broth is good but not exceptional. My friend got number 21, the bun bo hue and it was good but not disappointing. We have both dined at many Vietnamese restaurants. It wasn’t what we expected but hey, it’s still tasty. Service is a downer with the lady. She was very grumpy but when we paid she finally cracked a smile. It may have been an off day, come on, we’ve all had our off days, right? I think this place survives with all the autobody and car shops around, perhaps even with the other workers along Bridgeport. Maybe even with the residents along no. 5 road and river road. I still think it’s great to have this place in the North Richmond neighborhood. But if you’re looking for a type of specialty, this wouldn’t be the place to explore. It’s a place that caters to the locals in that area. It’s still a great option over junk food. Too bad there isn’t a decimal rating. I would at least consider a 3.5 rating.

Pretty decent Pho place considering the area is pretty limited in restaurants. As usual the first thing I do when trying a new Pho restaurant is try their form of Pho Dat Biet. Needless to say, this place was pretty decent, although I wasn't too 'gun hoo' with their pricing on their Large Pho Dat Biet at $11. Overall, a pretty decent place with their sit anywhere philosophy and food. I'll probably be back to visit when I find myself in this area again. Update (October, 22, 2016): So I've come back multiple times to try out their other dishes, mainly the Roll Combo $7.95 and the Grilled Chicken and Shrimp rice dish. Neither of them blew me away, the peanut sauce for the rolls was kinda watery and the rice dish that had the shrimp tasted burnt (maybe cause they grilled the shrimp plain without flavor), the soup that also comes with the rice looses points for not having a piece of bone with meat on it. Overall, I'd come back only to kill the time since its near my workplace, but I'm not too crazy about the pricing or the flavor of the food.

Pho Japolo’s chicken pho is absolutely amazing! The broth is rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced, with just the right amount of seasoning. The chicken is tender, and the fresh herbs and toppings elevate the dish even more. It’s the kind of recipe that feels comforting and satisfying with every bite. If you’re craving a hearty and delicious bowl of chicken pho, this place is a must-visit. This is another recommendation on top of the lemongrass chicken. —————————————————————————— Wow, another gem for a good value dining in Richmond. I love searching for good quality fresh healthy foods around and this is one place where you can find some options. I had lemon grass chicken here and it’s delicious!
