Halibut House is one of my all time favourite restaurants in Victoria. It is family run and that translates into incredibly fresh and delicious dishes, attentive service and a wonderful community atmosphere. I ordered the A combination plate for one and received a generous serving. The vegetables were perfectly al dente, and everything was piping hot. I may have done myself some damage by eating it all, but it tasted so good. As I enjoyed my dinner, the phone kept ringing with take out orders. I arrived at 5:20 and was grateful that there was a table available , as it didn’t surprise me that shortly after I sat down, others started coming in. I’m not surprised to see that Halibut House is still as popular as ever and they deserve to be. Give me a restaurant where the shareholders work in the kitchen and serving tables, rather than some corporate restaurant that has formulas for everything, they know how to cut corners, and they really only care about shareholder return. Let’s celebrate and support family restaurants whenever possible. You’ll almost always get a better meal and better...
Read moreif ur missing ur asian mom's cooking, then u should come here because thats what its felt like when i was eating here!! their combo set B for 1 person had great fried rice (with some FLAVOUR?!!) paired with perfectly cooked brocoli and beef thats tender and packed with tonnes of flavour. however the sweet and sour pork kust tasted like hogh fructose corn syrup and unmarinated stinky pork, and the spring roll tasted quite unmemorable 2.5/5 however their fried squid was EXQUISITE with the most irresistable soft texture followed by a coating that almost falls apart when u bite into it, with its crispy parts melting into ur mouth. the spicyness is mild and so is the flavours but its still quite addictive to eat 3.7/5 their stir fried peas were also perfectly stir fried with not too much oil and a good amount of flavour (oyster sauce?!?) and paired with well cooked onions 3.5/5 their tofu tasted like nothing, coated in a sauce that looked brown but tastes like nothing....
Read moreI don't understand the high reviews. Went in tonight to order a couple combination dinners. Strictly would NOT allow substitution of Rice for Chow mein which shocked me. Any other Chinese restaurant would let you do that. A starch for a starch. It's not like i was asking to replace it with meat. Its noodles instead of rice.
The hostess seemed very friendly but VERY Stressed out. And I can understand why, its a busy place. But her direct stressed answers made it uncomfortable.
Meals came out, VERY small portions compared to other Chinese places in Victoria. Usually the chow mein/rice is overflowing off of your place. They don't "Coat" their sweet and sour pork in a bowl of sauce, they pour it ON TOP of the pork and leave some balls with no sauce.
The spring roll was all doughy inside, not cooked long enough. And the beef and broccoli was soaking wet with grease.
Never been here before. Never...
