I have been going to the Galiano bakery for as long as I can remember so I was disappointed with a recent experience I had with the new owners. I had purchased an apple turnover for breakfast and when I took it out of the paper bag I noticed a spider had gotten stuck in the filling, died, and was then baked into the pastry when it was reheated. This wasn't a huge shock to me since the pastry display case and front door are left open during store hours and there are often flies and bees floating around the pastries. I showed the turnover to the cashier and was given a replacement turnover. However the owner stepped in and began insinuating that I had planted the spider, at which point I left with the new turnover (I'm not sure what I had to gain by lying since I gave the first apple turnover back uneaten). I wasn't upset about the spider in the slightest, but as a semi-regular customer it was really disappointing to see how the owner handled the situation.
I also noticed in the back of the bakery the bakers were using Kirkland brand frozen pastry shells and Kirkland brand bread. The chocolate croissants are also suspiciously similar looking to the ones sold at Costco. The pastries are fairly expensive so I think customers expect that they were made in store. Many of the shops on Galiano sell goods bought from Costco (which is fine), however unlike other shops on Galiano the Bakery marks the price up 50x and presents them as homemade.
If you’re visiting the island then Oxeye is a much better choice for baked goods and coffee. It's only a 1-2 minutes further from the ferry terminal and the food and drink is exponentially better (freshly baked...
Read moreI travel often to the Gulf Islands, and remember this Bakery Cafe from when I lived on Galiano and happy its still going strong! Indeed, it is the ONLY place to go for coffee first thing in the morning (like 7 am which means the bakers clock in at 5 am ) ) except for drip coffee at the Garage There is always a line up , waiting for the OPEN sign to light up Inside it is basic, countertop seating, but incredible color photos of resident pods of Orcas are attractively displayed The staff is always smiling and friendly. I love their delicious Turkey sandwiches (day old only $4.50)and fresh Pain au chocolat that tastes tres francais and uses real butter and delicious chocolate fresh baked every morning and by the time I buy two and two coffees and walk to my friend Andrews, they are still warm Thanks Sturdies Bay Bakery Cafe I love you all the time but especially on a cold rainy day at 7 am when NOTHING else is open!CHRISTINA FERRERO YOU TUBE ARTIST LISTEN TO DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER AND NANOOSE BAY...
Read moreWe received an unnecessarily rude reception when we stopped in for coffee this holiday Monday. The woman serving was joyless and curt. It turns out that we were the lucky ones; the people behind us were told that she was not “accepting” any more customers... this 8 minutes prior to the cafe’s closing time?!?!
We sat outside and watched as dozens of customers were turned away before the posted closing time without an explanation or apology.
It was a bewildering way to treat patrons. Not what I’d call a sound business plan.
The coffee & food were mediocre at best. I’d recommend avoiding this spot, unless you’re into being...
