My sister and I grabbed a bite to eat at Taste of Ukraine 🇺🇦. Neither of us had been there and were delighted with the friendly service and delicious food.
First of all, the atmosphere was lovely. The main lights were low but they had some additional fairy-like lighting with a decorative accent tree in the middle of the dining space. Paired with the gentle Ukrainian music playing, it gave the place a classy vibe. The murals along the walls are also very beautiful.
To start, I got myself the Ukillini, their twist on a bellini to make it look like the Ukrainian flag. It was refreshing and sweet.
Then we shared two entrees, which came with a side of perogies as well as an additional side. I chose the kovbasa and kraut (ham garlic sausage and sauerkraut) with the additional side of nalysnyky (cheese crepe roll with dill cream sauce). I was blown away by the airy and creamy texture of the crepe. The skin of the savoury sausage was a bit tough, but they provided a sharp knife to cut it into bite-sized pieces. As you would suspect, the perogies were top notch, with the exterior dough being soft and delicate and the inside potato mash, smooth and packed with flavour.
My sister chose the dnipro dream (salmon wrapped in a puff pastry with lemon dill sauce) and the cabbage rolls in tomato sauce. If you come, I highly recommend getting the salmon! The combination of flavours and textures was amazing. The cabbage rolls were tasty as well and made a good side option.
While we were full from our meal, we managed to find some room for dessert and tried their mini cherry perogies and mini blueberry perogies. Both came with a side of vanilla ice cream. I couldn't decide which was better but my sister chose the cherry for its both its sweet and tart flavour. You could also tell the blueberries were fresh had that "made with love" feeling to them.
I highly recommend trying this place. Just make sure you double-check their hours of operation...
Read moreWe ordered take-out for 3 from Taste of Ukraine the other day. The website lists closing at 8:30 pm; however, the door shows 8:00 pm closing. I arrived at 8:00 pm to pick up and had to wait since our order wasn’t ready even though we gave half hour heads-up to them. We all ordered the Sampler, which doesn’t include any protein - so I ordered the kubasa x3 with it. Our bill for 3 came to just under $105 w/tip - the kubasa was $10 each extra and was only the size of a Smokey. While waiting for our order, I noted the restaurant is trying to capture European old world charm in its decor; however, it’s now dark & very dusty overall including the glassware that overhangs the till. I could see that much of the glassware could use a good wash! I couldn’t tell if the perogies were good or not because all we got for $105 was a big ball of mushed dough and there was no butter added to keep the perogies from sticking together. We all ordered cheddar perogies but I’m not certain I seen or tasted any cheddar in the big pile of mushed dough. I’m not certain how many perogies were in the ball of mushed dough. We got 2 cabbage rolls each, which were meh…my Ukrainian aunt didn’t eat the cabbage since it was a bit tough from not being thoroughly cooked. The Nalysnyky was meh…and I didn’t eat the Pyrizhky since it wasn’t that good. I wouldn’t recommend eating here for the price and overall poor food quality. Uncle Ed’s in north Edmonton is excellent alternative with a better price. Also, Saskitoba is much better priced and all you can eat....
Read moreThere is alot to unpack here.
Firstly the location is in a wonderful town worthy of its own review and exploration. Parking is not hard, right near the entrance in kind of a strip center.
Walking in reminds me exactly of a traditional restaurant I frequented in Kyiv. Decor is done right with working life and traditional painted depictions. The tables and booths are of heavy sturdy dark wood and examples of Ukrainian decorations are all over the place.
The food is also traditional. Having married into a Ukrainian family, my opinion might be elementary, but everything was authentic and tasty. I went full bore with the cherry ribs and corn porridge etc. You really would do yourself a justice in coming here and exploring the menu a few times.
Place was pretty full and I got the impression this was not untypical. Everyone was enjoying themselves and plant of conversations. Atmosphere was...
