The first indication that this is a popular/great place was that the 70–80 seat capacity filled within a half hour of opening. People, of all sorts, seemed happy to be there, and brought the atmosphere of this fairly dated establishment immediately to life.
The second and most extraordinary aspect was the owner, a lady who came out to greet us first-timers with a warm demeanour and made an effort to stop and chat.
Minutes after we placed our order, the lady came out with a significant helping of a complimentary enriched wonton soup that was head and shoulders above any dish we had throughout our 5 days of dining out in Thunder Bay. This free serving was so generous that we could not start the actual dishes we ordered, and had to take them away. However, we did have a little taste of the egg rolls, chicken balls, fried rice, and the honey garlic ribs; every item was definitive comfort food; the chicken balls were mostly chicken and not deep-fried batter, and the ample, tastefully marinated meat on the ribs melted off the bones. No corners are being cut at this family restaurant.
What else can be said? The men's bathroom was clean, the servers and kitchen staff were friendly, efficient, and not intrusive, nor did they visibly show any strain in keeping the full house satisfied.
The cost of dining here was the final indicator that this restaurant intends to far exceed other dining establishments in all aspects. As we have never done before, we left a 45% tip. Superbly done, thank you for that master class on what a great dining experience should look, feel, and...
Read moreJJ’s Family Restaurant has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My family has been going there for generations and it’s still just as great as ever. The service is always friendly, the food is consistently delicious, and the portion sizes are amazing, especially for the price these days.
One thing that really stuck with me was when we tried to go in during a storm and they had to close. Totally understandable of course, but the next time we came in they actually remembered us and gave us some free stuff just to say sorry. They didn’t have to do that at all but it really showed how much they care about their customers.
It’s places like JJ’s that remind you what a true family restaurant feels like. We’ll keep going back for many years to come. They even gave me a toy car for my baby which was such a thoughtful touch and really...
Read morei ate there with my parents, the food was incredible, and the portions were massive. the owner and her boyfriend are very friendly and accommodating to everyone there. We were only charged for our main meals, and they gave us extra portions just because they felt like it. while eating, suddenly they brought us extra spring rolls, and a tray of deep fried wontons because I was saying when we walked in that i was hungry. There was another family there with their young child, and they had a bin of treats they brought and let him pick out what ever they want. Also a older gentleman came in to pick up for his family at home, and they asked how many people were there, he only asked for 2 portions, but since he had 3 people there, the owner gave him 3 portions so everyone had some regardless...
