This opinion from a former old school Mr Submarine "master". Belly Buster is about the best submarine place in the city since the old Mr Submarine days of the 80's. Back then Silversteins bakery (McCaul St), used to supply all of Mr Submarine's buns. And, they were amazing buns! Not the in-house baked nonsense you see now (first introduced by Subway Sub in late 80's early 90's). But, everyone loved the smell of fresh baked bread when they walked into the store. And the choice of white, whole wheat, honey oat, all that was good. But, the bread quality was and still is pretty much garbage. Also, back then you had a dedicated 6-in bun (which was actually 8 in). Now, both Mr Sub and Subway just cut their 12's in half. Subway first introduced multiple toppings for free which Mr Submarine immediately adopted. That was good (Mr Submarine previously had limited toppings and used to charge for extras). Also, all their meats were pre-cut and pre-portioned. Perhaps worst of all was that their lettuce was also pre-cut off-site and shipped in. Sadly, this is now the industry standard. The lettuce served at Subway and Mr Sub is vacuum packed in nitrogen and, can be weeks old by the time it gets to your plate. I digress. Wisely, (and thankfully), Belly Buster cuts their own lettuce daily. Not too crazy about the purple onions - Vidalias would be my choice. The one thing that could truly elevate the Belly Buster sub would be to source a bakery to supply their buns. For that, they would...
Read moreIt really pains me to give a bad review of this place but I feel something should be said. I've been going to Belly Buster's for over 20+ years and have never had a reason for complaint until now. A couple of orders ago I noticed the bread was different. I actually thought it may have been stale. Odd because the bread has never been off. It put me off enough that I didn't order again until 2 months later hoping that it had just been a fluke those last times. Sadly I was disappointed once again. The bread has been changed?? It used to be soft and a perfect compliment to the contents inside. I had even spoke to others who were Belly Buster fans and found they had the same opinion. The bread just tastes stale and ruins the sandwich overall. Maybe a new supplier?? Bottom line, all the elements that use to make this sandwich great are now lacking. One small change can make a HUGE impact and very begrudgingly I think my days of ordering a Belly Buster sandwich has come to an end.
I have since found out that they do make their own bread there now, as opposed to having it brought in. I will say that yes it’s nice having fresh bread, but it is still different from the original sandwiches that we as a family have come to love. It’s still good, but it’s not what we fell...
Read moreIs this place under new management? I have been coming here for the past 10 years and today was treated VERY rudely by a staff member when ordering lunch. As one staff member was about to wrap up my sub, I pointed out that she had not put in any bacon as ordered. She replied that it was in there, and politely replied that I didn't see her put it on. The white male coworker who was putting on the veggies rudely replied "yeah, yeah, we got it". The female worker double-checked and indeed the bacon was still in the microwave and not on my sub. She then corrected her error. No apology was given by the male coworker in how he spoke at me. Not sure if it was the colour of my skin that triggered the white male, or perhaps being female, or that I was wearing a mask, or if he was simply just a jerk. With so many other food options in this city, and with the food here becoming more average and overpriced over the years, I will definitely be taking my business elsewhere. As a female POC, I will not be returning. Oh, and this whole interaction occurred in front of my 2 young children standing beside me. So at least it was an opportunity to teach 6 and 8 year old girls what...
