Bonus points to Boomerang for offering food at great value, diversifying the cuisine in the area (finally there's Vietnamese on the Danforth!), and being so nice and welcoming (thanks, owner/chef Gabriel!). We stopped by for an early dinner and got: Teriyaki Chicken Banh Mi: The baguette is on the softer/chewier side versus hard/crispy (which I liked, but can see some folks not liking it as much). Teriyaki chicken was well done and flavourful enough. Good amount of veggies, nice sauce. For just $10, it was a huge sandwich. Vermicelli Bowl: I know this will sound weird, but the vermicelli noodles tasted really fresh which was great. The spring rolls were properly crispy. Would have liked more of the veggies though since they were a bit drowned out by the noodles. But at just $12, you get a big bowl. Cheese Spring Rolls: Good value at just $6. Would've liked it a bit warmer and with more cheese. Vietnamese Coffee and HK Milk Tea: Standard stuff. You can customize the sweetness.
Gabriel is both the chef and owner, and seems like a genuinely nice guy. He asked for feedback while we were there, was super pleasant to deal with, and gave us an extra spring roll since my wife was a repeat customer. It's tough starting any business now, so I hope good fortunes boomerang back...
Read moreI ordered pickup today - the staff were very friendly. I had the chicken sandwich, veggie jerky snack, and egg flower soup. The price of the combo was very reasonable and it was a big lunch. The sandwich was just what I had hoped - classic banh mí, with generous chicken, cucumber, cilantro, and a fresh roll. The soup was a good warm up on a cold day, and had large pieces of tomato which made me feel a bit better about splurging on takeout for lunch. The veggie bites were tasty but I was expecting perhaps something crunchy (and warm) but they were soft and room temp. All and all, a great new addition to the neighborhood. Oh, and you can order directly on their website to go and pick it up yourself - saves on fees and saves them commissions. The website does ask for an address but it’s pickup-only that way. Otherwise they offer delivery on all...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place and support a new local spot but unfortunately the taste of the teriyaki chicken banh mi was just bad and sour. The sandwich did not taste good enough to eat, I think it might have been off, to be honest. I couldn't bring myself to finish my sandwich which is very rare - I threw it in the garbage. I now see that I'm not the only person who found this. I can't think of the last time I threw food away.
The soft bread I see now in other reviews was ok, but of course I was expecting a more traditional crusty baguette.
I'm going to try again another day because maybe this was an off day, or maybe this style of banh mi just isn't to my taste preference.
Edit: I did not order on skip the dishes, I walked in and the owner was very nice! Does not change that the banh mi...
