Absolute mess start to finish. This will be a long review because it was... A lot. TL;DR, order was delayed, they messed up my order, did not apologize, and when trying to rectify my order, insisted they did NOT mess up and gave me my order and still managed to miss items. Food was decent but pretty overpriced. Chorizo was dry, guacamole was too citrusy, pork quesadilla was bland. Birria and asada were good. We were missing chips for the guac and no garnishes (onion, cilantro, lime). All tacos were missing salsa.
I placed my order on their website. Got an email saying my order was received at 6:17 PM and a follow-up email at 6:23 PM that my order was processed. Pick-up time for 6:37-38. I got a call at 6:40 PM saying that my order won't be ready until closer to 7:00 PM and that it was a system error of some sort, all orders take a minimum of 30 minutes to prepare, and they would call me when my order is ready. At this point, we were already there. I waited in the car and closer to 7, I went to their outdoor patio waiting area where other people were also waiting. Pretty busy place so I was ready to give them the benefit of the doubt.
At this point, they were trying to fix an order for a customer who was holding a bag that had "CATHY M" written on it. I asked the customer if that was her order and that I think it may be mine as that's my name, and she said no, this is my order, it's just missing some things. Weird coincidence, I had thought. I didn't push the issue because maybe it was a coincidence. After their order was sorted, I told them my name and they gave me a smaller bag labelled "CATHY V". The inside contents were not my order so I went back inside to let them know and that I believe they gave the previous customer my order. It was 7:10 at this point. They started talking amongst themselves, but I could essentially hear them bickering about 3 orders for Cathy M, Kathy N, and Cathy V. The older woman essentially yelled at the younger girl and said this is why we can't take turns at cash. A very clear mix-up had occurred. Seems like a problem that could've been solved with by confirming a customer's phone number on the bag, but okay.
The older woman then proceeded to tell me to wait a moment and that my order is coming up. In this time, other paper bags were sitting on a shelf with customer names on it. No customers had been called to tell them that their order was ready during this time. Just tacos getting soggy from steam. While waiting for my order, the older woman would go to the kitchen and come back out at least twice to tell me my order is on the way and that they did NOT give my order away. At 7:20, She finally comes out with my order and hands me a bag labelled "Kathy N". My receipt was stapled over Kathy's original order. No apologies for any confusion whatsoever, no apologies for the long wait time, no offer of anything whatsoever, just ego. I briefly looked through the bag, but at this point, I was both hungry AND tired, and against my better judgment, I just left, thinking they couldn't have possibly mess this up further.
When I got home, I unpacked everything and realized we were missing the chips for the guac and there were absolutely no garnishes. It seems as though other people have had other issues with customer service. I truly sympathize with restaurants at this time and I come from a family that has a small business themselves, so I really wanted to like this place, but my overall experience was unfortunately very unpleasant. I hope they can improve their processes for...
Read moreThis joint by the intersection of Jane St. and Lawrence Ave. is a small hidden gem in Toronto for authentic Mexican food. I visited during early lunch hours and fortunately the restaurant was empty so I could easily grab a seating. However, from what I could see, there were only 5 tables which could accommodate about 30 people and I could see getting a seat during busy dinner hours could come as a challenge. The small interior decors exhumed a cute, lovely touch and brought about homely vibes of authentic Mexican cuisine
I ordered a dish or their signature 5 beef birria tacos and they were some of the best tacos I've ever had, albeit in my limited experience of authentic Mexican food. The meat was soft, juicy, tender, and certainly brimmed with deep flavour in their birria marinated soup base. Their corn taco shells were freshly fried, providing nice crunchy, smokey flavour and were neither soggy nor too hard. The melted cheese within the tacos brought nice soft balance to the deep flavours of the meat.
I highly recommend putting every salsa/topping of diced onion and cilantro in your tacos as they were designed to be and dipping/soaking your taco in consomme every time so that your taco is dripping with juicy birria for each bite.
The small portion of their corn tortilla nacho chips they bring as an appetizer were crunchy and smokey. I recommend eating only a few of those nacho chips as appetizers and leaving the rest as "desert" until you finish your meal as you would still have a half-full bowl of their birria consomme left after you finish your tacos. Then you can use the left-over consomme as a juicy flavourful dipping sauce for your nacho chips.
A can of diet coke and their medium sized (5) birria tacos came out to $32.70 after tax. A bit pricey considering the tacos were on the smaller size, but the exquisite taste of their dishes are certainly worth the price and would serve as an unique experience of authentic Mexican food every once in a while if you...
Read morehey say money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy tacos... and honestly, have you ever seen a sad person eating tacos? On a hunt for great Mexican food, I ended up at Comal Y Canela (1692B Jane St, York, ON M9N 2S4). A down-to-earth Mexican restaurant with an entirely halal menu, this place is a go-to if you want a chef quickly whipping up tacos, tortas, burritos & enchiladas!
Onto what I ordered! The Nachos were crispy, cheesy, and absolutely mouthwatering, a perfect start to the meal. The Chicken Flautas were perfectly crisp with a tender, flavorful filling that made every bite a delight. For dinner, I had the Cheesy Birria Tacos, which were hot, gooey, and brimming with tender, flavorful meat—easily the highlight of the meal. Moving on to dessert, I tried the Lime Charlotte, Mi Vida (a beautifully executed tiramisu with a unique twist), and sweet breads—Mi Vida stood out with its perfectly balanced coffee flavors and smooth texture, making it an unforgettable end to the meal. To wash it all down, the Hibiscus Limeade (Jamaica) was refreshing and tangy, the Horchata creamy and comforting, the Jarritos Lime was crisp and citrusy, and the Mexican Coffee was smooth, richer than regular coffee, and the perfect end to the meal. We also added the Chicken Al Pastor, which was juicy with a hint of pineapple sweetness that perfectly complemented the savory spices. Everything was incredibly authentic, packed with flavor, and the portions were more than enough for five people.
