Although I really enjoy their Arabic coffee on the regular, I had to deal with a subpar experience with one of their servers, who goes by the name of “Q.”

Due to the current covid situation, he asks me to wait for my turn outside as there can’t be more than two customers in the shop. No rules or a sign to indicate this, but no problem I step outside and wait for my turn. When my turn comes and I’m waiting for him to finish my order, another gentleman steps in and completes his order without being warned or told to wait for his turn. I asked “Que/Q/Queue” about this and he literally said: “well, he’s a regular customer.” When I responded by stating the obvious which is, the current pandemic doesn’t have any preference for regular or irregular customers, he said nothing. Fast forward a few minutes later and while I’m having my coffee outside, another customer appears with no mask and completes his order with Mr. Q not advising him anything with respect to the city’s indoor mask policy, which is a bylaw.

So I go back in the shop, I politely ask for the manager’s card (emphasis on the word politely). I question him why he would feel the need to apply the rules on a customer like myself however completely disregard the same rules towards two other customers within the span of 5 minutes and right in front of me. What was the issue Mr. Q, was there something about my appearance you did not like? He proceeds by saying “well, maybe you should work here since you know the rules.” Granted, these are basic rules everyone in the city is not having any difficulty following. Thanks for the offer Q, but I already have a job that I very much like and would rather stick to. And please spare me the passive-aggressiveness and your rude behaviour, seems like you need the job more than me.

I call the manager Salim and explain the whole situation. He was very understanding and apologized on Q’s behalf, which was very considerate. But Salim, please also don’t imply that I’m one of the “customers that are confrontational and bring negative energy.” When Q asked me to wait for my turn outside, I obliged. I was polite to him when I ordered and I even went ahead and tipped the guy. But also don’t expect me not to confront him in a situation like this when he feels the need to apply rules to me yet let’s two other customers have a pass... because...

I’ve been here a few times, and today I wanted to try something new. I ordered a pistachio-saffron latte and specifically asked for it iced — I even requested less ice. It wasn’t busy at the time; there was no line, so the barista had time to clarify. But when I received the drink and confirmed that I had asked for it iced, a different barista informed me that this beverage is only available hot. What was particularly disappointing is that the barista who initially took and prepared my order made no attempt to clarify this, nor did they respond when I asked about it again. There were multiple opportunities to inform me that the drink could not be made iced, but this was never communicated.

Not to mention, the drink itself was underwhelming. It literally tasted just like the other regular latte we ordered but with soggy pistachio pieces on top and only a hint of saffron. It lacked flavor I expected from the pistachio. The baked goods were the...
