First, let me say the food itself is excellent—I’ve never had any complaints. This restaurant is always our go-to for special gatherings, and everyone enjoys the meal. However, I want to address the service we encountered, particularly from the manager.
I called ahead to order Garlic Bossam. When we arrived, I asked my friend to pick it up while I waited in the car. Unfortunately, he told me they made “Spicy” instead of “Garlic”. I’m certain I ordered Garlic—especially since some of our friends can’t handle spicy food. But there's no proof of whose fault, we really want to take this spicy order but it just won't work for us. My friend spoke with the manager inside, hoping they’d replace the order, but from his wordings seem like the only solution is for us to take the spicy bossam.
I went inside with another friend to explain that I’ve ordered here several times and know that if we request “spicy,” staff always ask whether we want hot or extra hot. The manager responded, saying it “depends on the person who take the order,” and then kept repeating that their protocol doesn’t allow them to resell food. He said this repeatedly, almost robotically, without offering a straightforward conclusion.
When my friend commented, “Then this is not our problem,” she was simply reacting to his repeated explanation of store policy—which, from our point of view, this is really not our problem. That seemed to offend the manager, and he began to confront her, insisting she “talk to him directly,” even as we were trying to discuss a solution in another language. It was clear he was struggling with anger management.
Eventually he said that the mix-up could have been either side’s fault, and offered to replace the meal—but only after prolonged pushback. Throughout the 20-minute chat, he never offered a proactive solution and continued to press us to admit fault. I told him I’m a loyal customer, not trying to cause trouble, and he said he’d worked there since the restaurant opened, but I’m not trying to have a competition with him lol.
While I’m grateful he finally replaced the order, the delay and his tone made the experience very unpleasant, especially on a Sunday night when everyone was just trying to relax. I want to emphasize again that the food has been fantastic since opening, but the behavior and attitude of this manager were unacceptable. I’ve never had an experience like this in Toronto.
I strongly encourage the owner to look into this issue and consider anger-management training for the manager. I know the restaurant has always been popular, but after this experience, the service really discourages us from...
Read moreI’d say this place could be considered one of the best Jokbal(Pig's trotters) restaurants in its class. When it comes to portion size, it’s clearly way too small considering how much they charge on their dishes.
Yes, it is definitely pricey. I’d highly recommend to those people who will be going to this place for drinking with some proper size of dishes, but it’s hard to be considered for an adequate meal size.
One dish which they actually say is good for two people, but I’m pretty sure you might still want something more.
Had tried their 3 main dishes along with Spicy Cold noodles as well. I was amazed on how they serve their dish. It’s nice and warm, tender and great flavour. I guarantee they use fresh ingredients on their menu. One thing what I was not satisfied is that Spicy Cold noodles. It was way too sweet. It’s supposed to give us some spicy kick to cut down the greasy taste from the pig trotter, but it’s not spicy enough and way too sweet.
Reviews the dishes I'd tried:
First Main Dish_ Garlic Jokbal: Almost perfect seasoning, no need to add more sauce. Just enjoy as it is, it is the best way. It’s sometimes hard to cook it properly, but they know how to cook. Love its tenderness, it does not mean it’s mushy. It was braised for adequate time.
Second Main Dish _ Spicy Jokbal: For Korean’s palate it’s not spicy at all, and it’s too sweet. They can still keep the sweetness but definitely it needs to be adjusted on its spicy level.
Third Main Dish _ Braised Pork: What I really liked trying this dish was that it has some pungent flavour that might have added from medicinal herbs. That actually cuts greasy taste down, and it makes the dish more abundantly.
_ Overall, this place is worth it to visit, but still their portion size needs to get bigger when considering...
Read moreHanyang Jokbal is located near Yonge/Cummer in a small plaza. I can’t say much about the storefront or inside of the restaurant as I ordered delivery. They are available through Ubereats. I decided to order the half jokbal and bossam set as well as a DIY rice ball. On a busy Friday night, my order took roughly an hour to arrive at my condo.
Delivery wise, all the food items were packed well. I did find that the prices were a bit on the more expensive side but after looking at the generous portion of jokbal and bossam I was satisfied, definitely had leftovers. The jokbal and bossam came with a small soup (not sure the name but it was a bit spicy and had some beansprouts), kimchi/bamboo shoots, green onion, garlic/peppers, several sauces, and lettuce. The DIY rice ball was interesting with several different ingredients on top of the rice. They also provided a plastic glove which was a nice touch.
Taste wise, the jokbal and bossam were delicious! Wrap the meat up with a piece of lettuce and different toppings and it’s like a flavour explosion. The pork pieces were not all fatty (I think it was a mix between pork belly/shoulder) and the jokbal was tender. I definitely could not stop eating but had to because it was very filling after a while. With the DIY rice ball, I mixed all the ingredients together with the rice and just ate it with a spoon...delicious! All the flavours worked so well together. Overall, tasty food and generous food which will leave you feeling full (with a lot of leftovers!). All this food was perfect with a glass of wine (or if you have Makgeolli or soju that would be great as well).
Definitely recommend Hanyang Jokbal for delicious...
