We hosted a large family event at Mezes for 60 people and it was a fantatsic experience-- I highly reccomend their special event space! Our celebration was held at their events spot, just a few doors down from the main restaurant (its their previous restaurant, before they opened their new location). The events coordinator Debbie and the lead wait staff Costa and Nico were amazing and made sure everything went without a hitch. They helped us set up to accomodate our group and accomodated us for decorating and setting up what needed arranging in advance. The space is lovely and well appointed and the food- WOW! We eat at the restuarant all the time and weren't sure that it would be quite the same at the event space but the food was as good as ever!
The menu package we selected started with dips platters and grilled pita. The staff were extra cautious and supportive around allergies and keeping our guests with food needs safe, seperating dips containing allergens. Then we had saganaki (cheese on fire) and piles of the most delcious, tender calamari. Our mains included greek salad, chicken and veggie skewers and rice and potatoes. Everything was delicious, and perfectly seasoned and hot, despite needing to feed a whole restaurant at once! We didnt realize how much food it was- it was a lot!!! And when there were leftovers, they helped package it all up so folks could take food home which made us feel so much better about not wasting anything. We ended our meal with Galaktoboureko, a delicious desert made of phyllo and a cream/custard filling similar to cheesecake. People were raving about the food, both at the event, after the event, and in texts and emails since. It was that memorable and beautiful a meal.
If you are looking for a private/dedicated place to hold a larger event I can't recommend Mezes highly enough! They are professional, helpful, attentive and excellent at what they do and helped to create a worry-free, beautiful celebration for our family that will never...
Read moreWent out for a family outing to enjoy some Greek on the Danforth. I called earlier in the day to make a reservation, but was told they weren’t taking any. When we arrived there was a big group of people waiting, so I was told it would be 30-45 minutes...understandable since it was a Friday night.
As an hour approached, everyone including those who came in after us were seated. The “hangry” was starting to set in but fortunately the girl told us we were next. A table was opening up to accommodate us and we had our eyes on being seated....until a group that walked in at that moment were seated. I wasn’t happy and spoke with the manager, he told us they had reservations.
This is when you officially get angry as a customer, I explained that I called earlier in the day, and he proceeded to tell me that they have a cut off for reservations and we must have called after that point. If that’s the case, you should tell the caller that chances are you’re going to be waiting a long time to sit down, if you decide to come in that evening. 1.5 hours later we were finally seated.
The Horiatiki salad was very fresh, but it was missing something...maybe it was the oil. I also ordered the lamb chop by the piece and pork souvlaki...both were good. Tried some of the octopus that was ordered at the table, it was soft and tender. My main course was an order of Gavros (pan fried anchovies), flown in from Greece. What they brought me looked, and tasted like smelts...anchovies are very salty, I said they brought me smelts, they said anchovies...agreed to disagree.
Ultimately, everyone thought the food was good, not great. I’ve had incredible Greek before, can’t say I did here. I give it 4 stars because of the atmosphere and Dimitri, who was a...
Read moreI really didn’t enjoy my time at Mezes. I understand it’s deep history on the Danforth and have read the raving reviews, but my first and only visit didn’t sit very well with me.
I genuinely love Greek Food. Sometimes I travel in the middle of the night to the 24 hour restaurant, Zet’s to satisfy my Greek cravings. However, I felt that Mezes’ customer service truly took away from my experience and is the sole reason as to why I won’t return.
The older gentlemen who was our server had a pompous attitude. He barely greeted my partner and I with a smile and took a substantial time to take our order. It was only when we interjected our order that he bothered to take it. Everyone else seemed to be the priority to him. Since a child, I’ve eaten starch and meats with Ketchup; even when eating my mothers beautiful cooking and when cooking my very own meals . It has never been a personal thing to attack another’s quality of food. I understand that some may take it personally but when serving to the public, those things become subjective. I asked for ketchup with my meal, and the older gentlemen’s winced and turned to my partner for his order. We never saw him again our whole meal. No ketchup. Another server took up his slack. Our Original server even sat down on the upper level to have his meal, glancing at our table and eavesdropping on our conversation. Very uncomfortable.
The food was great but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to enjoy my meal the way I paid to and wanted to.
Regardless of our experience, we left a $20 tip on top of the gratuity that was charged to our non-alcoholic meal. It will just be...
