I had the distinct pleasure of dining at UNO Bistro on September 7, 2024 with a Ukrainian friend who introduced me to it. In a word, this place is superb. The food, environment and the staff are all first rate.
I cannot say enough about the sublime beet borscht with chicken and dollops of sour cream that I had there. It is without doubt the very best I have ever had – anywhere. It will leave you craving more.
For my main course, I had chicken Kyiv, which was done perfectly, light golden brown breading on the outside and juicy flavourful chicken on the inside. I had, of course, a side order of scrumptious potato varenyky - with more sour cream! All of this served by our delightful and efficient server, Kate.
My meal was topped off with a perfectly done cappuccino, decorated on top of the foam with the traditional Ukrainian trident symbol.
The dining experience was enhanced by the wonderful energetic ambiance created by the adjacent musical chatter of local Ukrainian regulars at other tables. And I don’t even speak Ukrainian!! What a cultural treat.
The manager, Mark, can be very proud if this establishment !
Finally, a word of caution; Be sure to get an extra order of the borscht and sour cream to take home. You will suffer very deep withdrawal symptoms if you don’t!!
Happy dining at UNO Bistro.

Read morein terms of the food: I ordered from doordash and OMG this is as close to true homecooked food as you're going to find. whoever makes your polenta, I am going to find a way to steal your recipe bc its better than mine
everything looks exactly like the pictures and it's priced fairly for the portion size
in terms of the "no russian" signs: i can't say i fully agree with this personally. canada is a place where everyone is treated equally and if I got kicked out of a place for speaking romanian or english, I would be absolutely livid. at the same time, things are very tense at the moment and this is a country where personal freedom is encouraged and while this is a business, it's a family business
I'm not going to tell someone how to run their business; if they decide they want this then they should be free to do it, and if people decide they don't want to support then for it, then they should be free to condem them. this is literally why we all came here from our home countries - for freedom
back to the food: yes 100% worth it! nothing I tried was bad, and it didn't leave you feeling tired from grease like takeout food usually does. very much recommend you go here first if you have never tried eastern european food before or if you're missing...

We randomly stopped by Uno Bistro and ended up discovering a true hidden gem. The moment we walked in, we felt warmth — in the atmosphere, in the décor, and especially in the food.
We were lucky to catch their soup of the day — солянка (solyanka) — a rich, flavorful, hearty Ukrainian soup that instantly brought comfort. It tasted just like home. Served with a slice of fresh bread and sour cream — simple and perfect.
We also tried chicken Kyiv with mashed potatoes, crepes, and some delicious sauces on the side — every bite was full of flavor. The food was fresh, homemade, and truly made with care. Portions were generous, and the prices pleasantly surprised us — super reasonable for the quality!
The staff was very kind and welcoming, which made the whole experience even more special. And the small details — like the shelves of Ukrainian books on the wall — made me emotional. It felt like a soft, nostalgic hug from home.
Highly recommend this place if you want to taste real Ukrainian soul food and feel a piece of home...
