Dined in with expectations that it would be a higher quality hakka type place given the reviews. Unfortunately, my experience was nowhere close. I'm lucky I didn't get food poisoning.
I ordered the chicken wontons to start. These were tiny chicken balls in a disproportionately sized pastry, so I had to break off a lot of the excess pastry. However the chicken and pastry did taste okay.
After this, I went to the basement to use the bathroom. There was a stench of trash as I walked through and I saw a guy chopping ingredients in a backroom through an open door (smell when you leave your organics container unchanged for over a week). Not the most hygienic, but stilI overlooked it.
Our entrees arrived (Manchurian Fish and Crispy Beef). I read some bad reviews about the crispy beef (too much breading), but I assumed that maybe the reviewer just wasn't familiar with the dish. There really was way too much crisp and not enough beef, but that is not the reason I'm leaving this review.
After a couple of bites, the same trash smell that I experienced in the basement presented itself in the taste of the food. At first, I was in disbelief, but with every bite I took, the taste of trash became more noticeable. I had to send the dish back, but at this point I had completely lost my appetite, so I paid for the other items and left.
I'm leaving this review because I feel that there must be a major gap in sanitation and hygiene in that kitchen and I don't feel that it is safe for people to eat there. I really hope this business makes a change, as recent reviews of the food quality are not...
Read moreI'd like to start on a high-note, and that is with regards to the service, which was commendable. We had an Indian girl as our waitress, her name began with an M from what I recall- my apologies for not remembering it in full-, and she was just a ball of warmth and joy, really just a lovely person and highly attentive, excellent at her job. I'd heard this place was the go-to for Hakka, and an OG on that scene, so after seeing the reviews and photos, was keen to give it a go. Perhaps we ordered wrong, but there were about 5-6 different dishes, so that should be a pretty good representation. Sadly, we found all of the battered/fried dishes to be overly-mushy which really ruined what the dish ought to have been- even with sauce/gravy (we ordered half/light sauce), some crunch should be retained, but there was literally none. Further, the tandoori butter chicken really left a very unappealing aftertaste and had an unpleasant texture- overly grainy gravy. The rice we ordered as well as the soup were fine though, but...
Read moreHad got a reco for this place and for a long time and finally made it. The plaza is busy and very hard to get parking. The bathroom is not good so avoid. The service is really good and they can make adjustments to a dish if you need to.
The prices are reasonable and serving sizes are good. The interior is clean but probably has stayed like this for a couple of decades at least.
The Hot and Sour Soup - medium size was good for three. Good flavour, nice balance of spice, sourness, seasonings. The Manchurian Pakora with gravy was good. The gravy perfectly spiced with garlic and chillies. The pakoras could have been more crunchy. The Hakka Chowmein not greasy. Fair amount of veggies and not too spicy. The Tofu Chilli was very good as well. Less spicy than it should be. The fried rice was pretty good as well. Not greasy and not too spicy. Also had fairly good veggies.
All dishes vegan and enjoyable. Only if this place was close to home. Would come...
