I really wanted to like it as I love small town diner/restaurants.
My expectations were high because of the high reviews it had.
Started great, right in the middle of downtown, a big unpretentious simply decorated dining room with large windows giving a view of life on the street.
Good coffee came quickly in large unmatched mugs. Loved it. The breakfast - less so. They had run out of back bacon so a large part of the menu wasn't available. Both of us got the special. It came quickly yet inexplicably, not cold, but less than warm. Don't understand. It was minutes between ordering and being served. Food should not have cooled that fast. Plates were cold as well which didn't help. Eggs were small and home fries disappointing. Seemed like chopped boiled potatoes thrown quickly onto a pan or grill just long enough to warm up. Choice of white or brown toast, we ordered brown, still came white and cold.
Friendly service and decent prices but I don't see ourselves going there again much less recommending it to anyone. One of those sad times where Tim Hortons might have been the better choice.
We didn't want to complain to the server as she was very nice and we didn't want to come across as a pair of whiney city dwellers.
Sorry to write this as we went out of our way on our drive home to come here.
Next morning made basically the same breakfast at home and it was great.
The new owners should focus on the reviews of the last few months as they resemble our experience. Wish I'd read them before going there. By the way, I looked at the lunch menu while paying the bill at the counter. $15 for a burger?? In Tweed?? ...
Read moreMet a friend for lunch, hey lets try the gatehouse. Sort of busy, no big deal. We get our menus, lady takes our order, 15 mins later she comes back, "oo we dont have bacon, the truck didn't come in", YEAH OK, gives us back our menus, OO did I ask if you wanted something to drink? NO. you didn't. 3 more tables get filled, she takes our order, table next to use, the burgers are different, "oo the truck didn't come in" !! Seems to be their go to answer. Well the 3 tables that came in after us, got their order and we are STILL waiting for ours! This was pushing a good 45 mins. ENOUGH! Told the woman, this was my first time here and it is my last time, she said, "well if you want to be like that" I said NO, you and the cook made it this way. We went to Vitos and had and amazing lunch. We filled them in about our adventure, seems to be that's the way gateway treats their customers. SUCKS to be you. OO by the way, mothers day weekend was 2 weeks before. I never said the waitress was rude, so stop your lying. As for being disruptive, yeah ok, because I made it known that 3 tables came in after us and received our food, I was disruptive...LOL. What you missed was, word of mouth advertising. I already had 80 people say they will NEVER go to...
Read moreI heard good things so desided to try it out since they had reopened with new owners.
The food was ready in 20 minutes despite being so busy. The prices were very good for the portions. Only I found the food bland and disappointing.
Ordered a chicken Cesar wrap that came soggy and only had chicken, lettuce and dressing on it- no cheese or bacon.
The gravy in the poutine was chunky and looked like jello and the curd was chunks of mozarella cheese.
Also order a chicken souvlaki with rice and was told it came with rice and I could get fries or potatoes instead, but they were out of potatoes, which was fine so I got fries.
It came with two burnt chicken skewers and only one spoonful of rice, and a bunch of friends, so it ended up being a waste of money.
I won't bother trying to order...
