I was first introduced to pubs in the UK. Vancouver pubs are quite different – a large number of them are unimaginative, typically dark inside with black walls, black cheap furniture, blaring music, TV screens, the opposite of enjoyable. As usual, I was crawling on Google Maps looking for places near Jonathan Rogers Park that offer vegan food. I didn't expect to find vegan dishes in a pub, but because they have lots of outdoor tables, I checked out their menu just in case. The words 're-imagined' on their website caught my attention – they actually offer a number of plant-based menu items! Their Vegan Bahn-Bao is quite amazing. Now that Mila Chinatown replaced their tofu bao with deep fried crispy bean-curd, Steamworks may be the only place in town we can get a less garlicky tofu bao. I like the miso marinated mushrooms, but they were a bit tough to chew –perhaps they are uncooked... The watermelon radish is a nice touch, and the bao stuffing looks beautiful. I also ordered The Pleasant Salad, but because the dressing contains regular egg mayo, I ate the salad without dressing. My partner ordered Jaeger Schnitzel, another item we didn't expect in a pub. The spätzle was not as chewy as I would make them, and they looked a little too processed (not passionate enough). The purple cabbage was very good. Their house made apple cider was very refreshing. On our second visit, we both ordered the Bahn-Bao, and shared the Vegan Goddess Bowl. I guess a bowl is nothing like a salad, it has rice instead of leaves. Although the maple soy tofu was good, the turmeric cauliflower was dried out and not enjoyable. Inside the taproom, the walls are not black, and the seating was quite attractive. But because the music is pub volumn (loud!), we wouldn't have been able to stand it inside if outside seating was...
Read moreI have never felt compelled to leave a negative review until today's appalling customer service experience at Steamworks on Main Street.
On May 12th, my 89-year-old father, who uses a wheelchair, my mother, my partner and I wanted to enjoy Mother's Day brunch at Steamworks.
Despite the host (who was actually super kind) politely asking a couple of patrons to relocate to an available high top table so we could use a wheelchair accessible low top table for my dad, they declined, leaving us with limited seating options. Though baffled by this initial encounter with other patrons, we decided to brush it off and we found an alternative table, albeit cramped. The patrons on both sides of us were not concerned.
At this point, our server approached us without greeting and abruptly informed us we couldn't sit here due to access concerns. We explained the situation at the other table, resulting in us moving to this available table. Thankfully, the diner beside us noted that she was ready to leave and kindly offered up her table, which completely resolved the space issue. Yet, our server's rude attitude, evident in her disgusted expression towards us, continued on as she dropped waters off at our table. She looked at us as if we were an incredible nuisance to her. I was completely shocked by her attitude towards us, and our two sweet elderly parents who were just trying to enjoy a nice Mother’s Day brunch. The experience left us feeling humiliated and we decided to leave even before ordering any food. We had enough.
The disrespectful treatment we received ensures we will never return again and I hope that no other elderly person/person with a disability has to experience this type of dehumanizing treatment at this...
Read moreSteamworks at Mount Pleasant is a fantastic spot for unwinding after a long workday, especially if you’re into beer and casual social gatherings. Each location of Steamworks has its own menu, and this one didn’t disappoint! We visited during Happy Hour, which is a big plus since they offer it every day! The Happy Hour menu has a decent selection of food and beers, making it a solid place to grab some drinks and snacks with friends. You can check their website for details, but trust me, it’s worth it. The patio is pet-friendly, which was a nice surprise, so we got to dine with our furry friend while enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. The space is larger than it looks from the outside—plenty of room to relax. The vibe is a classic pub setting, though the music can be a bit on the louder side, so keep that in mind. Another great perk is the Costco gift card deal! We spent $80 to get a $100 gift card and were happy to learn that we could use it during Happy Hour as well. Overall, it’s a great hangout spot with a welcoming vibe. Definitely will be back! Food on the table: AHI TUNA CUPS GUACAMOLE & CHIPS BUFFALO CHICKEN BITES HAWAIIAN PIZZA 📝📝
