This is the second time that we came back to the Railwork Lounge for their breakfast. We came here for the first time on our visit to Whitehorse last year. Although the kitchen had run out of most ingredients for their menu last time, we still had a decent experience and had great service.
Unfortunately, the dining experience this time around was a complete 180. Things were good at the start, but towards the middle/end of our dining time, a lot of things went downhill and left us frustrated. For someone who has worked in the service industry throughout high school and university, it takes a lot to be considered as a bad dining experience.
Good aspects about our experience: We entered through the hotel lobby and were quickly seated at a table by the bar area where I could see the kitchen. The restaurant’s ambience is nice, clean, colourful, and sunny. We had our orders placed without having to wait too long. Service, when given, was friendly. Yogurt and granola bowl was filling (although yogurt-to-granola ratio wasn’t great and it was kinda dry and also not sure if it’s worth the 9.50$???)
What wasn’t great: Quality of any hot food was abysmal. The dishes offered looked great on paper but left you desiring more. The sourdough waffles we ordered came out soggy and cold. The ladies to our left gawked at what they were paying for. One lady received cold French toast without the custard or berries although it was what it was supposed to be served with; the kitchen did not communicate that they ran out ingredients and served it dry. The waitress went back to the kitchen and came out to relay that they ran out of the ingredients but walked away without offering any alternatives; the lady had to get up and approach the bar for some butter and syrup at the very least. Can’t fathom why a SINGLE piece of buttered toast cost $3??? I really had expected at least another slice and did not think that “toast” on the menu was not in plural form LOL Other restaurants would give you at least two! Did not think they would be cheap about it! Service quality could be greatly improved if they hired another server to help out the other two. Management really needs to reconsider what they consider as “good” for customer service to reduce the stress of the workers and improve the customers’ experience. The servers had a tendency to leave food sitting at the kitchen service window for a while before bringing it out, which probably explained why food was cold. No one checked in on the tables around us for water refills or to ask if we needed anything. It took us legitimately 15 minutes to receive our bill and pay. The tables to both my left and right complained of the lack of service as well. The husband of one lady joked: “Welcome to the Yukon!” Newer tables that came in after us had to wait a while before having their orders taken. Heard one server argue with the kitchen to make breakfast food even though the kitchen had already switched to their lunch menu. Service at the front to seat guests was inconsistent. We were seated quickly. On the other hand, one server wanted the other to check for a table of four and the latter promptly said “We don’t have any room” and turned away without seeing what potential wait times are. Those people ended up walking away. At the end of our stay, I saw a family still standing at the front who have already waited for 10-15 minutes without being seated because the servers were preoccupied with making coffees and running orders for a group of 6. I told them to take their...
Read moreLocated on the main level of the Raven Inn, The Railwork Lounge is convenient while staying at the Inn. The food is good. I ate a few meals there during my 4 day stay. A couple of lunches and dinner. I most enjoyed their Reuben and their buttermilk chicken sandwich. The Reuben was a bit big for me but was nicely done. The buttermilk chicken wasn't what I expected but was a pleasant surprise. I also had the bedrock burger. It was good but for me the beef patty wasnt made the way I like. Good but not spectacular. The side salads are nicely prepared and I enjoyed a really nice soup of the day which was a creamed pepper soup. They have a really enjoyable creme brulee with orange zest in it! If you like beer in tap they have a nice selection of local brews to enjoy with your meal. The service is excellent and you can tell the folks working there enjoy what they do.
I would return and recommend if you are staying at the Inn or even if you aren't...and get the...
Read moreWe dined here on our first day of our stay at the Raven Inn hotel. I tried the special, a crispy chicken Caesar wrap, but was disappointed—it had very little chicken and was mostly hard crunchy breading. Hoping for a better experience, we gave the restaurant another shot for takeout this evening. We ordered the chicken fettuccine pasta, which was bland, along with honey garlic wings and Korean BBQ wings. The honey garlic wings were more like pure garlic sauce, with the garlic sauce soaked into the inside of the wings that squirted out when bitten into— they were extremely greasy. The Korean BBQ wings were unfortunately just unpleasant in flavor. While the wings were a good size and well-breaded, the taste was a major letdown. I ended up tossing almost 2lbs of wings in the garbage (and wings have to be pretty bad for me not to eat them). While our servers were great both times, with a few days left in our stay, we’ll...
