Ralph's German Restaurant And Café — Restaurant in Winkler

Had the chance to visit Ralph's German Restaurant and Café in Winkler, MB recently. My husband is German, so we were really looking forward to trying some authentic dishes.

We ordered the full bratwurst plate and the jagerschnitzel platter. The bratwurst (made in-house) was excellent and plentiful, I ordered it with a small but fresh side salad. The buttermilk dressing (likely house-made) was fantastic—highly recommend. The plate could have used an extra traditional touch, like sauerkraut, though fries were an option. Big regret not taking home a pack of their bratwurst—they sell them, and I’d recommend grabbing some to go!

The jagerschnitzel (pork) was also good—literally the size of the plate—served with what I’m sure was house-made spaetzle. **Note: My German chef husband suggests adding a touch of garlic powder to the spaetzle batter for even more flavor. The portion was generous, but hubby did miss the traditional red cabbage or sauerkraut on the side (it may have been forgotten that day, since I’ve seen photos of it served).

We tried the side order of bread, based on rave reviews, but it must have been an off day—ours was a bit stale. Same with the latte, which was okay but not quite the traditional flavor I’d expect for the $6+ price.

Overall, Ralph's German Restaurant and Café is a nice, quiet spot to enjoy hearty German food. We wished it was a bit more traditional German atmosphere. Friendly, welcoming service and very fair pricing make it worth a visit. We were too busy eating to remember to take...

At the time when we called to make an reservation for 5.30 pm, one of the staff told us “Can you come at 6?!”🤨 Wait… it gets even better…! We were 6 adults. We ordered 6 dinner entrees and drinks. Fist 2 dishes showed up 20 min after the order has been placed. Next 2 dishes came in 5 min after that and last dish came 8 min later. We all had to wait for last dish to show up to begin eating. After waiting for a very long time for our food, the last dinner plate had a very long hair in it!!! After waiting for 28 minutes!😠 We called server and showed what we have found in the plate and got an answer- “Shoot”! Not apology or anything closer to that! Server came back after 10 minutes with a fresh made plate and gave it to us without any explanation. We also asked for 2 refills, our server totally forgot about them! We asked another server and FINALLY received it! And it gets even better after that! We asked for 3 to go containers.. and received a dessert boxes size containers instead. When we had half of plate full of leftovers 😳🤔😡 Either it is some kind of joke or that’s how they treat their customers?! When I asked for a “normal” size box, because I’m not trying to cut all of my food up in small pieces and play puzzle trying to fit it in a box, I got offered to give my plate to the server and they would do it for me! After all, I was very disappointed with the service and food. This place used to be much better 5 years ago! Not comming back EVER again! One star is only for the homemade...

My favourite place to go for German food. Pork or chicken schnitzel to die for! I get cravings for this place! Generous portions, home cooked goodness reminds me of family gatherings. Relaxing atmosphere. I have come here many times by myself or with friends or family and nobody has left hungry and everyone loved the food. Very friendly, polite staff. Reasonable prices. I can rarely finish a full portion of pork schnitzel with mashed potatoes and rahm sauce because it literally hangs over the sides of the plate when you get it!
