I don’t usually leave reviews, but after this experience, I feel it’s necessary. What happened at Breakwater was unacceptable and needs to be addressed. I had fond memories of this place — I came once before with a friend, and both the male and female owners were incredibly warm, welcoming, and kind. That made the recent visit even more disappointing.
When my friend and I walked in, we were immediately met with coldness and attitude from a blonde staff member (not the owners). No smile, no greeting — just a blank, almost annoyed look. As someone who is half Caucasian and half Filipino, accompanied by a full Filipino friend, we couldn’t help but notice the stark difference in how we were treated compared to the white customers who came in after us. They were met with friendly smiles and engaging conversation, while we received eye rolls, impatience, and completely incorrect orders.
Her behavior wasn’t just rude — it felt targeted, and whether intentional or not, it came across as racially biased. Winnipeg Beach is becoming a much more diverse and cultural community, and that should be embraced — not resisted. There is no room for racism or discrimination in places that serve the public, especially in a town that should be growing in inclusivity, not moving backward.
Breakwater used to feel like a safe and friendly spot, but after this, I no longer feel welcome — and I’m sure others who’ve experienced similar treatment feel the same. The owners need to take a serious look at how their staff treat people who don’t fit a certain image. If this kind of behavior continues, it will hurt the reputation of what was once a truly inviting local gem.
Until there is a clear change, I won’t be returning — and I’ll be encouraging others to think twice before supporting a place that tolerates this...
Read moreNew owners came to the beach in May. All I can say is WOW! They are INCREDIBLE ❤️ Super hard working, friendly, inclusive, and take pride in everything they serve and do. As a resident of Winnipeg Beach, I truly enjoy a good cup of coffee, quality ice cream or a yummy Italian soda! They have so many sugar free options which is nice for me as I need to watch. You can get Italian Sodas (which is yummy) in regular or sugar free versions. They also have alternative milk options like Oat and Almond milk. Their blue licorice ice cream is to die for. (That has sugar but man worth it lol) They have a no sugar added Black Cherry Ice Cream which is super tasty. Oh! And Brewtein! 30grams of protein drink! In the evenings I enjoy Rooisos teas as they have no caffeine and 30x the antioxidants of green tea. They have another herbal tea called Winnipeg Beach. So much offered. A few last things to mention. They have a stamp card so every 10th drink is free. They sell special items at the store and I’ve acquired a few. Love them all; from my Winnipeg Beach Sweater, to my cute s’mores cooking nightlight, natural headache roll on, ceramic mug, fun candles - amazing! 😆 If that weren’t enough, the owners and staff are so thoughtful and sweet. It’s a pleasure to support such great people. So happy and proud to have them apart of the...
Read moreI stopped in during my walk while exploring Winnipeg Beach and decided to order an iced hazelnut matcha with oatmilk. It was delicious and the service was friendly and welcoming. The whole vibe of the coffee shop is bright, sunny, and floral.
The drinks and ice cream flavors are expansive and the prices are fair. There's something on there for everyone.
While looking for a restroom through the hallway on the far left of the counter I stumbled upon a little store in the back. The owner was back there and I unfortunately did not catch her name but she was very friendly and pleasant to conversate with. She supports local artists by selling their crafts and goods in her store. They had homemade candles, tea lights, mugs, trinkets, soaps, crochet sweaters, cutting boards, coasters and other fun little things.
I highly recommend you stop here for coffee and to shop around if you're in the Winnipeg Beach area. Visitors and locals are quite lucky to have such a quiant shop located in their humble town.
PS. The restroom was immaculate and perfect for my grandma since she can be particular with cleanliness ;)
PPS. There is outdoor seating for your furry friends! There was a cute Golden Retriever sun bathing by his family on the...
