If you want to grab a bite out of Winnipeg's history this is the place to go to + ITS SO DELICIOUS AND FRESH!
It is so pleasant and endearing to know a place serving its community since 1930, just do the math - 93 years - 9 decades - almost 5 generations of people have been visiting this bakery. Mind blowing, heart warming, so so beautiful.
Three owners later this place is still standing, still slinging the original recipe bread + new additions as and when things are trending and getting added in our baked world influenced by flavours and trends from across the globe. Their store is a perfect paradoxical example of time standing still and yet being in touch with the present and future. When I went in I think I talked I think with one of the current owners and they are a passionate bunch of people running things with younger people who seem enthused about being there to make and serve what they are offering.
I tried their sweet as well as savory croissants, the original loaf and some scones at one outing and a few other times I tried one of their cake slices and dainties. Every time I have had their stuff it has always been fresh and tasty. The croissants are fluffy and buttery, the scones are flavorful and not dry(very few places manage that), the best was the loaf and oh boy that bread was tasty bread which I was so ever excited to have everytime I planned on makigmng something with it at home.
If you have someone coming to Winnipeg, take them here, it's probably not as fancy, or extra instagrammable(yet) but their food is both. You are missing out on major delicious goodies, you should have a fomo if you are...
Read moreCottage Bakery… I don’t even know where to start. I walk in thinking, “Okay, maybe a coffee, maybe a little something sweet,” right? WRONG. Wrong! I see the brownie, and I swear to God, my knees go weak. I’m like a kid in a candy store, except this is Winnipeg, it’s freezing, people are walking past me in Canada Goose jackets looking miserable, and I’m losing my mind over this damn brownie.
I take one bite, and suddenly life makes sense! I forget about the potholes the size of small lakes, I forget about the hobos yelling at each other at the corner of Portage and Main, I forget about waiting 40 minutes behind some guy buying 400 lottery tickets at Safeway. I’m just sitting there with this brownie, thinking, “THIS… THIS IS WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT!”
And the staff? Amazing! They’re smiling, cracking jokes, like they KNOW what they have behind that counter. I wanted to hug them but didn’t want to drop my brownie so I’m awkwardly flailing like a maniac. People are staring. I don’t care. I’m living my best Winnipeg life in this little bakery.
I swear to God, this brownie is so good it should be illegal in Manitoba. You eat this thing, and you forget about the snow, the traffic, the $6 coffees, the entire winter. You could be standing outside in -30°C windchill, holding this brownie, and you’d be like, “Yeah, Winnipeg’s okay… maybe.”
Five stars? Forget it. Ten stars? HELL NO. ONE MILLION STARS. I’m gonna dream about this brownie tonight, wake up screaming for another one, and probably cry if I can’t get it. Cottage Bakery, you magnificent monsters, you’ve ruined all other...
Read moreIn a place where people buy cakes from supermarket chains for their convenience, Cottage Bakery showed why custom made cakes are far better in quality, taste, and sentimental value.
The staffs working in the bakery are so nice and they want to help you. First of all, I was late in ordering as you need to give them 2 days prior notice for special ordered cakes. But, they understood my situation and actually they agreed to make the cake on 1 day advance notice. That showed the human nature in the establishment.
The cake, it was so beautifully made. It was simple and elegant. As I tend to judge a place (bakeries) from simple chocolate cakes, I was quite satisfied the quality they gave me in that cake. The instructions were followed clearly and after it was cut open, the layers were made beautifully.
Now the taste, it was so good. As I said supermarket cakes may be half the price but their taste is all so horrible. This cake had the perfect balance of sweetness and chocolate flavor with the natural hint of natural bitterness which you get from better quality chocolate products. The Frosting was light and fluffy and not at all greasy.
So, in short, the staffs are friendly, they give you good quality products and the store is really clean. I don't know what you want more from bakeries but if these are the things you look for, please.do visit them. They...
