I went back to see if a change in ownership would improve food at the restaurant. I was willing to give it a try.
I didn't have many expectations about the taste of the food considering my previous experience there (it was not good before) - only a hope that it might be better.
Boy oh boy was I wrong! If it's at all possible the food was worse. Having been raised in a Caribbean household I for one can tell you that the quality and taste of food at Deen's is awful. I had the was goat roti this time. It tasted weird, there was hardly any meat in it and consistency of the shell was bizarre.
We also had an order of fries. You'd think that you wouldn't be able to screw up french fries, but they were successful in screwing it up. They were so greasy that when you used your fork to pick up the fries - oil would ooze out of them. Talk about disgusting.
I don't understand how this restaurant has managed to stay afloat with sub standard Caribbean food
They have better food at Caribana in Toronto at the food trucks. Don't waste your money here.
The staff were friendly though And the live music was good. It does have those two things going for it. Don't go...
Read moreAfter a long work week, a friend and I decided to pick up Deens on the way home. We chose Deens due to their location, but most of all, their high review on Google. I ordered a jerk chicken dinner and a chicken roti, which came to $29.00 before my $5 tip. While we waited for our food in the seriously dingy, outdated hovel with apparent health code violations, we heard the microwave from the kitchen being pushed on and off, and the door to the microwave being opened and closed repeatedly. Upon returning home to try and enjoy our purchase, we realized that the chicken they use is extremely cheap and full of gristle. Not to mention their non-Jamaican spices on their over-salted, supposed rice. My roti was runny and not your traditional shell - pure chickpea, potato, small bits of sparse chicken dark meat that resembled cat food. After two or three bites, we both looked at each other and accepted that it was inedible. Do not waste your time, money, or stomach here. Deens needs to be leveled. It's absolutely disgusting, to say the least. It's cheap for a reason. You get what...
Read moreWow, this place went downhill.
I used to come here often as a kid, 20-30 years ago, and always looked forward to it. This was the introduction and the standard for Caribbean food as far as I knew it.
Not anymore. By far the worst I've had in the city recently. I ordered the chicken roti and a beef pattie.
The roti: utterly devoid of flavour. It's not just not spicy, it tastes completely unseasoned- it's just chicken and potatoes in flavourless yellow sauce. Who is this for? The patio was packed with people drinking Labatt and listening to a classic rock cover band, so maybe that's the new market for Deen's? Were people complaining about the food having too much taste?
The pattie: literally a convenience store pattie (in its retail packaging), thrown in a microwave, for twice the price. And it's mild. EFFING MILD. This is like a bad dream.
If you like Caribbean food, avoid this place. If you've never had Caribbean food, avoid this place.
The original owners would be churning in their graves if they saw the...
