Gâto has been a favorite for a couple years now, since the markets, we also enjoyed the “Bread and Bake Basket” deliveries a lot and basically everything they have been offering since. We were hoping things would turn into an actual store and we are so glad this dream came true. The vegan options which first attracted us are not only amazing but so flavorful that the competition with the non vegan menu is always tough as they are both equally delicious. The sourdough croissants are so tasty, with endless layers and a crisp crust, you can easily judge a bakery by their croissant and once you try Gâto’s you know you will find so much more there. The menu is never boring with a rotation of delightful creations of many flavors, local and international. I am constantly impressed with the creativity and the art as it’s always hard to choose between taking a picture or eating first… This year we, customers, are blessed to have a weekly special croissant and so you get to try a new decadent treat with an already delicious croissant foundation, it’s a surprise every week like for exemple, a Pina Colada croissant or this week was a dreamy Strawberry Green Tea croissant (not kiwi). The bread is also some of the best I had in my life, the kids love the sandwich bread, there is also a special kind of bread every week. The focus on local sourcing, the sustainable direction chosen by the shop, the overall vibe from all the staff are also reasons why we keep coming back, on top of some of the best vegan and non-vegan food we ever had! The family in Paris still talks about it ;-)
PS : we even visited a house recently that mentioned the bakery as one of the perks of the neighbourhood, being able to walk to Gâto would definitely be a...
Read moreThe service was good. Good variety of vegan pastries. I tried all their vegan options and they were delicious, specially the Chocolate praline tart. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the price. Overpriced, even though they have a good mission by reducing their carbon print and organic products, theres also other bakeries offering delicious and organic pastries for 1/3 less of their price. Would visit more often if it wasn't for that inconvenience. Also, the cream of the carrot cake and the cranberry meringe tart wasn't consistent. Order it twice, one day was delicious the 2nd time did not taste fresh.
November 2022. Unfortunately I have to reduce my visits to gato. Their prices keep going up, I used to go there 3 times a week but now once a month, If ever. For 25 dolares you get 3 items and each being smaller than a regular hand. Consistency of products have changed dramatically. Cronuts and croissants with very little filling while I am paying 7$ for each (with taxes). Its ridiculous. Changing my...
Read moreI recently moved to Winnipeg from Calgary, and have been looking for a proper French/European-style bakery. In a previous life I was a baker myself; my mom and I ran a small bakery/cafe together in YYC, and I still have a small passion for bread! Anyway, on a whim I decided to wander past the Wolseley Farmer's Market and oooh - there were rows of beautiful croissants so stunning they literally caught my eye from across the street! Purchased one croissant and a pain au chocolate and HOLY JESUS it was the best croissant I've eaten outside of France. Crisp, flaky, buttery, rich but light, great chew, a hint of sweetness in the glaze, and lovely yeasty, sourdough notes that didn't detract from the OG Croissant Flavour Profile (ha) that one has come to expect.
Suffice to say I'm obsessed! I'm very excited to try their bread - their website's sourdough photos look GORGEOUS - as well as their other...
