Charts Café — Restaurant in Wolfville

My first experience there was utterly disappointing. My friend and I were seated at two different seats and there were two white ladies who wanted a seat. I was seated on the couch and out of everyone else, the server decided to come up to me and ask me if I could move. I wasn't initially phased by it but when I approached the server stating that; I know it was not his intention but I should not have to move to accommodate other customers, he was completely dismissive of the point that I was trying to make. In a cafe, where everyone else was white, why was I, the only visibly coloured person asked to move? I thought this out before coming on here to post it, "am I victimising myself?", "Am I overanalysing the situation and overreacting?" His response proved that this was, in fact, a situation where racial microaggressions were exhibited. When I approached him to reflect on why was I asked to move, his answer was " well, you can sit there if you want to." It is bitterly disappointing to have to go through such microaggressions in a town that presents itself as so diverse...

I've been coming here almost daily during the week now for almost 2 years.

The coffee is excellent. And fresh.

Baked goods are excellent. And fresh.

And their soups are adventurous and delicious.

And the service? I sat down having purchased my goodies and dropped my fork accidentally onto the floor. I got up and approached the counter to exchange it but was beaten to the finish line as the Server had heard the drop and had already grabbed a clean one for me and was on her way over...

How thoughtful is that?

When we approached owner, Jesse, about the possibility of us hosting a little surprise birthday open house for our mother's 85th, without hesitation, he said yes. Jesse made not one, but three delicious gluten-free/dairy-free cakes and he and barista, Alta, took care of all 23 guests attentively and graciously (while tending to other patrons). Always excellent coffees, desserts, and light lunches prepared and served in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Thank you Jesse! If there were 10 🌟 s to give, Charts...
