My recent visit to Cafe Nga Tim on October 1st was a mix of nostalgia and slight disappointment. I was surprised to find the once-bustling restaurant relatively quiet on a public holiday.
The meal was a series of okay, but not outstanding, dishes. The highlight was supposed to be the curry crab, but its rich flavour was overshadowed by the staggering price—over HKD $500 for a crab just over 18 taels. The other dishes failed to pick up the slack. The baked mussels with cheese were decent, and the beef short ribs (牛仔骨) were passable. However, the shredded chicken (手撕雞) was unpleasantly salty. Even the classic Macanese bacalhau fried rice (馬介休炒飯), a dish I usually love, was merely acceptable; the fluffy rice was there, but the distinctive flavour of the salted cod was underwhelming.
Overall, the meal was just okay. It had been a while since my last visit, and it seems the magic has faded. The combination of questionable value and generally average execution made for a less satisfying experience...
