Now that I have more time to explore, I’ve been able to discover more eating spots. I had a fish and chips place in Xiamen, but didn’t have on in Guangzhou. Until now. The Happy Monk serves western food, and I had to try their fish and chips. Bliss. Four pieces of delicately breaded fish, with plain, old-fashioned French fries (no Cajun or truffle flavoring) served with coleslaw, tartar sauce and ketchup. Even though I am not a dessert person, I had to try the brownie with vanilla ice cream. I had stopped there a couple nights before and had the vanilla cheesecake (perfection) which I didn’t get pictures of. I figured the brownie and ice cream would be great, and they were. I’m not a really a drinker, but it seemed like there were plenty of brewskis to be had here, along with a lot of western style food options. The pleasant location (Kingold Complex) made outside dining wonderful. You can even eat outside if it’s raining—the huge umbrellas covering the patio give a cozy, yet open feeling.
