The Happy Monk — Restaurant in Guangzhou City

Now that I have more time to explore, I’ve been able to discover more eating spots. I had a fish and chips place in Xiamen, but didn’t have on in Guangzhou. Until now. The Happy Monk serves western food, and I had to try their fish and chips. Bliss. Four pieces of delicately breaded fish, with plain, old-fashioned French fries (no Cajun or truffle flavoring) served with coleslaw, tartar sauce and ketchup. Even though I am not a dessert person, I had to try the brownie with vanilla ice cream. I had stopped there a couple nights before and had the vanilla cheesecake (perfection) which I didn’t get pictures of. I figured the brownie and ice cream would be great, and they were. I’m not a really a drinker, but it seemed like there were plenty of brewskis to be had here, along with a lot of western style food options. The pleasant location (Kingold Complex) made outside dining wonderful. You can even eat outside if it’s raining—the huge umbrellas covering the patio give a cozy, yet open feeling. On mild nights, the umbrellas are cranked down at sunset, allowing you to eat under the stars...

Great selection of western food (English and Chinese menus) including veggie, superb service, friendly staff. This place saved our lives when we worked in Guangzhou, cold beer, pizza, nachos, fries - a real treat. The fruit platter is incredible. Great bar, solid food menu and a reasonable beer list. The staff are always friendly & make you feel welcome. If it's (as usual) a hot & humid say in Guangzhou and you spot a Happy Monk bar, you know the beer will be good, cold & the food will taste great. Could happily be my local if I was...
