Vanburgh Hotel — Hotel in Guangzhou City

A typical Chinese hotel where many things are overlooked.||Hotel staff are very helpful however their English is very poor throughout every department.||My wife and I entered our room to find our room having a stale smoke filled odour with the carpet having many cigarette burns and ground in black grease marks in the carpet.||We asked for a room change which was attended to very promptly which gave me the impression that they try to give the worst room to tired Western customers and hope they do not complain.||We entered our new room which was much better with only a coupe of cigarette burns and only some small black grease spots on the carpet.||The rest of the room on first appearance was good as the decoration was first class with the bath room having TOTO bath and fittings so I decided to have a warm soaking bath after our long flight. Well to my total surprise the room was double booked as in came a total stranger who took a look in the bath room and promptly left. I did complain to the front desk who said that management was informed and it would never happen again. I checked with the manager to find he new nothing about it. Very old Chinese approach.||We found the most areas of the hotel very dark due to electricity saving efforts. The same applied to our shower which had very low water flow.||I am an early riser and like to shave and shower early while my wife still sleeps. This was impossible as the only way to turn off the main room lights using the master switch so I could not turn on the bath room lights and still have the bedroom lights off. Saved a little money but makes the room useless for couples.||The room was always very cold even though we adjusted the temperature control to 27 c, the control said it was 27 c but the room was freezing cold. This happens when cheap controls are used which may look good but do not work.||The breakfast was extensive but had a very limited choice for a Western breakfast as only the cheapest orange juice and coffee was available. To my surprise they did have smoked salmon which I had the first day, unfortunately it made me slightly sick as I found it was left out at room temperature for a long time, perhaps the left overs form the previous night dinner. The whole experience apart from the staff was very disappointing for a high class hotel.||I will never return or recommend...

Stayed for 1 night with family and it was decent. The hotel price is on the high side without any breakfast offerings. The hotel staff were decent, they should really be more friendly and work on that smile. During the time I checked in and out, none of the front desk staff even attempted to smile or asked how my stay were, it was like all business. The room was clean but the shower door was an awful design, water would flow all over the floor after you take a shower. Also, as far as appearances, the rooms looked nice, but the craftsmanship and quality of the material used were sub par, I know this because I'm in the construction business.
