Honestly, I’ve tried my very best to like and support this place. It being the only cafe on Ma Wan where I can take my dog and family. However, time and time again I’ve been let down by the unnecessarily aloof staff and poor service and ridiculous ordering system. I cast a sceptical eye on how many 5* reviews this place has too, it’s just not that good at all.
For the very high menu prices, the lack of trained service and the generally low food quality just doesn’t seem right at all. Nearly $60 for a tiny cup of coffee. $100 for a small bit of smoked salmon (low quality, farmed and dyed) on toast. The prices get more and more ridiculous and the portion sizes get smaller and smaller. Yet they somehow can’t come to the table and take your order. On average it’s been nearly $300 a head for us when going and we’ve needed to clear our own table once finished several times.
Today, I went with my baby to chill, grab a cup of coffee and dessert. I got in the short queue that for whatever reason was taking ages(as usual), asked one of the not busy at all staff, a middle aged lady, if they accept card payment. Instantly she said “yes”, she was accompanied by several other not busy staff, who 100% heard the question and her answer (yet nobody else corrected her). I gormlessly waited for my turn to order (like a child in line at the school canteen), the person at the till, asked me where were we sitting, I pointed out a table near the back (which was shortly there after taken by a couple who had just walked in) he took my order (a very young boy with a monotone voice and grumpy attitude). Surprise, surprise they magically don’t accept card. I asked them why the woman told me they did? He replied “she didn’t say that”, then that “her English isn’t good”, like 5 other members of staff who were strewn about not working, heard her and could have corrected her and saved me the wait.
It’s 2024, get a ruddy card machine. You’re over charging the hell out of the customers, your staff are lazy and feckless, so I’m quite certain you can make a few adjustments and afford the service charge for a card machine.
Except for letting in dogs and the nice view, this place genuinely sucks. With the exception of one cool guy, the majority of the staff are ridiculously aloof. Especially considering the quality of the and portion size of food and sub par service.
I just went next door to Little Mario’s and got the same view, great service and a delicious (and massive) tiramisu and coffee for a much better price.
Marona in the village has better coffee and the food quality is 100x better. They make you feel welcome and appreciated. Likewise Ikki Cafe, also in the village, is much more unique, better service and prices and generally a much better option for quality food.
I’m honestly never setting foot in Sol Comshittee again....
Read moreThere is no doubt that SOL Committee is the most scenic cafe in Hong Kong. Facing the Tsing Ma Bridge and Tung Wan Beach, for a second you feel like you are in the States instead of Hong Kong!
The camping chairs and retro interior design of the cafe with elements of revitalization definitely got my heart!
Most important of all, legit coffee is served here, together with some very delicious “new” coffee.
My friend and I ordered an Iced Banana Latte and a Cold Brew Coffee to share. The Iced Banana Latte definitely blew our minds! The skewer of caramelized banana pieces on top was supreme! Not only that, the milk foam had a nice, strong taste of banana! Love it! Best of all, the shot of coffee was deliciously aromatic!
And the glass of Cold Brew Coffee was stronger than your ordinary cold brew. Very enjoyable on a summer afternoon.
Definitely coming back again on my next trip to...
Read moreAttended the private kitchen and it was remarkable. From the starter onwards, it was a spectacular meal. Taste of all dishes were scrumptious and can tell they were from fresh and selected ingredients. In a way quite French in style with a lot of fine texture. Definitely MSG free and could enjoy the quality of the ingredients too. The risotto was unbeatable and super well cooked and seasoned. The cod was juicy and matched very well with the condiment too. The very interesting original coke and the Balsamic vinegar drink + ice cream were definitely something that should try. Very reasonably priced with the effort they made. It was a place with a lot of interesting antique furniture, super friendly helpers and wonderful view. Highly...
