It's a charming restaurant and cafe in Escazú, Costa Rica, serving traditional dishes like casado, gallo pinto, plato del dia, ceviche, as well as fusion brunch options, café con leche, fresh juices, desserts, and cocktails in a cozy setting. Located in the historic Costa Rican corner house Casa de las Chaves, now transformed into a retail shop and restaurant, it features friendly staff, tasty and nutritious food, and appealing decor. Visitors pass through an adorable fashion and gift shop to access the restaurant at the back. The establishment offers dine-in, takeout, delivery, outdoor seating, and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Some dishes we enjoyed: Pejibaye Ceviche: Pejibaye ceviche is a vegetarian dish made with boiled and peeled pejibaye (peach palm fruit), replacing traditional seafood. It’s a unique and modern take on the classic Latin American dish, often featuring a citrusy marinade, onions, and cilantro, similar to traditional ceviche but with pejibaye as the main ingredient. Their version included red onion, cilantro, lemon, and coconut milk, served with tortilla chips— a perfect, shareable vegetarian dish that is healthy and tasty.
Giant Patacones: Patacones are made from green, unripe plantains that are twice-fried until crispy. They are prepared by cutting the plantain into discs, frying them, smashing them flat, and frying again. They are served as an appetizer with shredded beef, refried beans, and pico de gallo. They are chewy, filling, and loved for their texture!
Casado is a traditional Costa Rican meal that typically includes rice, black beans, fried plantains, salad, and a tortilla. We chose shredded chicken and beef for protein. It was yummy, satisfying, filling, and delicious—all the ingredients were perfectly combined and...
Read moreThis is one of a kind spot. It's a must visit for any tourist who comes to the Escazú área. Typical. Eclectic. Artistic. Relaxing. Historical. Cozy. It's a place where you can find handmade items, from jewelry to clothes to toys even. There's a big patio that takes you to the restaurant/coffee area where you can have very good entrees and antipastos, as well as some sandwiches and other main dishes. There's a super sweet and spoiled cat in this place so don't freak out if you see him getting closer to you, he wouldn't do anything but melt you down with its sweetness. It offers privacy and one of the best ambiances to meet some friends, or even for a date. The place is casual but magical at the same time. I've only seen people smiling wherever I look at when...
Read moreWe were positively chased away upon arrival, in spite of the fact that we were invited there by our host. No attempt at all to find out if we had a reservation. I find it strange that goods are marked in dollars , yet no word in English was spoken or understood . (Later on it was explained that they were fully booked / reserved - but not for about 80 mins after our arrival ! . ) Nobody bothered to apologize. I think they have plenty to learn about client relationships . The food however, was outstanding! The goods they sell seem to be of superior quality and it appears they support local artisans and artists. They even have a clothing recycling division! The restaurant itself is beautiful and very well kept . I will like to go back - but...
