Nestled right beside our Cafe Playa Negra Hotel, we thankfully wandered into Jalepeno to find some pastries or goodies to keep our 11 mo old twins occupied for a wedding. The owner graciously let me peruse the many bakery items - pound cake, brownies, cheesecake and more, and offered suggestions to some other items he could whip up. I walked out with three fresh bananas from their market section and a piece of pound cake to test on our girls during our morning beach outing. It was all a hit! My husband and I shared some of the pound cake and both said wow would that be good with a cup of coffee!
After our morning at the beach we headed back for lunch to check out their dining options. I had the fish tacos - delicious with a generous helping of fresh mango cilantro onion relish on top! The tacos were homemade and a wonderfully warm serving serving vessel for the fresh fish. My husband does not like fish at all but took a bite of my tacos and said WOW! Big fan. My girls had their house special - sourdough grilled cheese with barbacoa and slaw. Wow!! I think I hate a quarter of it at least. Not overtly greasy, but perfectly crisp, gooey and hearty! My husband had the Barbakoa Burrito - the meat was insane!! So good! I should have asked but it seemed like it was smoked! Delicious flavor throughout!!!!! Hearty portion, perfect meals for a day in Costa Rica!
Lovely local cafe atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating, K Love Christian radio playing, and locals walking in and out to order food or pick up fresh eggs from the market.
I made a big ask of the owners after eating and inquired if they could make a simple pb&j for my twin girls for the wedding. He not only obliged my ask but went above and beyond!! Grabbed jam from his home, layered it with pb on the fresh sourdough and layered it with sliced strawberries which my girls LOVEEEE and crushed peanuts. I could have cried seeing it all cut up in a ziplock ready to go. This cafe is the depiction of hospitality and Pura Vida 🥲🥲 GO NOW! Skip the bland food around this joint that we tried first and...
Read moreVibes are everything and though I have wanted to try this place for the past two years I’ve live in Playa Negra, every time I come they are either closed or have the weirdest most unwelcoming vibes.
Today I tried it and it was aaaaaight. I’ll just say it comes from the top— and the owner has weird vibes, therefore the workers also have weird vibes and probably why I stayed away. Like can anyone be happy and kind naturally? Except the lady in the kitchen cooking who was lovely.
They are weird about dogs inside— so just know you can order on the side of the building which nobody ever told me in all the times I been here.
All in all it was expensive and I was not impressed. Glad I checked this place off the bucket list tho....
