BEWARE of the upsells. We just ate dinner here and were met with an unpleasant surprise on our final bill.
It started when we each ordered an appetizer - mine being cheese croquettes. That was all we wanted or asked for and the waitress made a recommendation regarding the cheese. My partner understood it to be the type of cheese in the croquettes. I understood it to be a combo platter that included the appetizers we already ordered. The appetizer came out and there was a platter of mixed cheeses with our appetizers. We didn’t ask for this, but I said it was fine and I ate some of it. My partner, who had told the waitress she was allergic to dairy, took a lactaid so she could eat some of this food in front of us.
I didn’t think much of it until after dinner and the final bill came. This cheese combo the waitress had brought us was 5x more expensive than either of the appetizers we ordered, which were also charged separately. So neither of us in any way asked for this dish, or understood what she was bringing, and it just so happened to be the most expensive thing on the menu.
That was the worst of many upcharges. Caipirinha? Try this (more expensive) one. Chips also? You want the special? Rice and beans with that too? While a bit much, none of these were egregious, except the cheese plate.
Now I know we could have refused anything or turned down more of the upcharges (when my partner ordered a salad for her main course the waitress suggested the most expensive seafood dish, which she politely declined. The waitress returned several minutes later to confirm she didn’t want more than the salad).
So we paid the bill, but also expressed our disapproval of the pushiness and in my opinion dishonesty behind pushing a cheese dish that was not relevant to anything we had ordered and for which one person already said she had an allergy, and happened to be so expensive.
I don’t know if the wait staff is trained in this approach or this waitress was a little overeager in her pushiness. Either way, it left a very poor impression on us. The food itself was pretty good, so I’m not recommending to not eat here, but if you do, make sure you know what you are ordering, push back on the upsells, know how much everything you order is, and send back...
