I don't usually leave poor reviews because I don't think it is worth it and I don't want to be too harsh to a restaurant. I also really wanted to like Amerigo's, but I have rarely felt so disappointed and ripped off. The food we ordered was wildly overcooked and oversalted. The portion sizes made absolutely no sense for a $40 plate where all of the side dishes have to be ordered separately for $8 a piece. We had a bite or two of our meal and just couldn't make it any longer. I will usually just finish a meal, even if I find it mediocre, but I just couldn't stomach this one. Plus, when we entered the restaurant, there were plenty of empty tables (that remained empty our whole meal) yet we were seated next to the door where a family was letting their children go absolutely wild. A restaurant should never let children run around the tables and yell over other people's meal, especially at this kind of premium price. Our waiter was nice but the service was pretty bad. We were never told any specials or information about their menu, and we ended up just sitting there for about 15-20 minutes after our dishes were taken away for anyone to come back to the table. There is absolutely no way that I think anyone else should have to pay this amount of money for such a...
Read moreExtremely overpriced and low quality
From the moment I looked at the menu I realized something was wrong: the prices looked like a fine-dining restaurant, but the place itself and the service felt like a typical casual Cypriot tavern of liw quality.
What we ordered:
Greek salad: small portion, with feta but no olive oil at all. Bland and plain, at €12.50 (!).
Halloumi: it was 1/3 of the size of a cypriot halloumi, served with a spoon of jam and a single arugula leaf for “garnish.” Price: €9.50.
Chicken with pesto and goat cheese (€23): tasted okay, but the “goat cheese” was practically nonexistent, just one teaspoon of pesto, and very minimal sides (potatoes and vegetables shared among all three of us).
Moussaka (€23): served in a tiny clay pot, bland, the layers were deconstructed and there was no proper structure to the dish.
Service was below average: it took 15 minutes for them to clean the table from the previous guests, service was very slow and both the waiters and the manager were cold and not friendly. The menu was in english too.
In total, we paid around €35 per person for food that in no way justifies such prices. I would not return and cannot...
Read moreIf you love fine food - this is simply the best place to dine on this side (Paphos/Polis) of the island and one of the very best in Cyprus overall.
I am a Canadian who has lived in Cyprus for 3 years now. I have fallen in love with the country, the amazing natural beauty, the warm-hearted people and definitely the wonderful FOOD! The are many wonderful 'Tavernas' in Cyprus and I encourage you to discover them for yourself. They will all offer a very similar menu and different levels of quality.
The Old Town shares the charming Taverna ambiance but it's a world apart when it comes to the food. This is what happens when a true Chef offers his version of the classic dishes and the outcome is devine.
While everything on the menu is fantastic (and I have tried most of it!), the homemade partridge ravioli with sage butter absolutely melts in your mouth. The wood fired duck is decadent with it's rich sauce, crispy skin.... The Meze (offered as a meat or fish version) is a great option if you have a group and want to taste many...
