Cafe Havehuset — Restaurant in Hillerød Municipality

During my 3 days in Copenhagen, this was one of my favorite spots to eat. The garden is lovely. The staff is friendly. It’s a wonderful break after wandering the gardens, before going indoor to visit the castle.

They open at noon and are tucked away in the gardens. On the particular day that we were there, there was also some type of birthday party with about 30 guests. In spite of this, the staff still welcomed other customers and spoke patiently with us as we asked about the menu.

You wait in line at the counter, order and pay, and then take your beer and go to the “buffet” line where the sandwiches are located. You get a plate and select a sandwich yourself, and take it to eat in the garden. I purchased 2 smorrebrod (the open faced sandwich) and a draft beer for 200 DKK.

You don’t need to “order” any flavors- they have a few flavors set out, and you pick from what has been made. I selected the fried fish cake with chunky remoulade, which was fine, but not my favorite. I also selected the smoked salmon with creamy horseradish dressing and lemon and I really liked this one because the creamy horseradish was a bit sweet and very fluffy. Very tasty and unique.

Beautiful spot for coffee and cake, lovely apple pie, though they do tend to run out of it. 50Krone coffee and cake deal is pretty good for DK with free coffee refills and really this is a spot to sit and have refills after a walk through the beautiful palace gardens which I never tire of.
