🍜 Food: So we ordered several items. 1️⃣ was the hotpot, with meat roulade, potatoes and mushrooms. I hadn't tried hotpot before so I checked the menu beforehand and made some searching online to decide what to order. I was excited actually but this experience of it was disappointing. I initially wanted to have corn and potatoes with spicy beef (not roulade) but both weren't available. several items on the menu weren't available. The mushrooms were in a very bad condition as you can see in the photo so I returned them because I was told there are none to get as a replacement, so it was just beef and potatoes and the soup base. The roulades were not roulades to start with, just thin rolls of meat with no stuffing or even marination. The portion was very generous but their taste was okay - not enjoyable, and not equivalent to the 338 price tag on the menu The potatoes were cut into huge pieces (so you couldn't fit many in the pot) and so thin that they crumbled when I put some when the base had already gotten very hot. Again, no marination or spices, just raw potatoes as is. Yes, the base had garlic and other spices, but it wasnt enough to give the potatoes and meat a nice taste...
Another annoying thing was that I wasnt given any instructions on how long to leave the items (I was only told to wait 2 minutes before putting the ingredients in!) and the turnable metal switch thing to change the level of heat under the pot had no lid so I had to hold it with a tissue and still i wouldn't have a good grip, so it wasnt easy to change the heat as I cooked.
*Considering this is a Chinese restaurant in Cairo, I think they should at least have like a one pager with the menu that gives basic instructions on cooking treatment for different types of ingredients (not each item) in hotpot dishes they offer (e.g. leafy greens, potatoes, noodles etc)
2️⃣ Dumplings. Again, a nice helping of 14 pieces each. They were nice and had the right texture
3️⃣ Sweet and sour chicken. Generous helping and the chicken and S&S sauce was nice but a bit too sweet.
4️⃣ My friend also ordered fried noodles but I didnt try them. Good helping as well and he didnt have any complaints about it.
🤵🏻 Service: Ok, the service was really bad. There was one waiter and he clearly didnt know anything about Chinese food because when I asked about ingredients he wouldn't really be able to elaborate. Also, his attitude wasn't the best - he didnt seem interested in answering questions and would always give sloppy/not very helpful responses. I know sometimes people have bad days but he seemed to generally not care.
🪑 Atmosphere: The place was alright. It's basically one big hall with regular tables and restaurant booth style seating options. We sat in one of the booths but it wasnt very comfortable because the seating was too far from the table. Also, there was a big group of people that were very loud on the other side of the hall and we could hear their voices clearly so the acoustics weren't very good. (Maybe background music would have helped!)
Overall not a nice experience. Might come again to try their noodles (something on the safe side!) but I would never eat hotpot there again. Also, I'd recommend that anyone who goes confirms the ingredients of any special items/dishes are made as they should be before ordering.
For management, I would recommend giving a little bit of training to the waiter(s) on at least the menu items and flavors + what entails good service/a good experience. Because people don't just come for the food, and when it's clear your waiters know nothing about the food and don't have any opinions to offer on it (in terms of recommendations), its not really...
Read moreSilk Road Chinese Restaurant offers a unique dining experience with a menu that attempts to capture the essence of traditional Chinese cuisine. The interior has a simple, yet authentic decor, which sets a pleasant dining atmosphere. A notable dish is their Kung Pao Chicken, which, while flavorful with a decent spice level, doesn't particularly stand out in comparison to similar dishes from other local establishments. The major drawback, however, is the pricing. The dishes, including the Kung Pao Chicken, are noticeably more expensive than what you might expect, and this aspect might detract from the overall value for money. While the service is generally good, with staff showing attentiveness and courtesy, the high prices might make one reconsider for regular dining. Silk Road could be an option for the occasional visit, but it may not be the first choice for those seeking both quality and value in their Chinese...
Read moreToday we went to Silk Road Chinese restaurant, we were craving authentic Chinese dishes and saw how popular it was on tiktok! We took potato cake, sweet and sour chicken, chilli rice cakes and lastly Beef with spring onion. While price wise it’s very affordable compared to others, taste wise was very disappointed. Sweet & sour chicken tasted like a mixture of jam with sugar. Beef with spring onions was super chewy with lots and lots of oil. Rich cakes were extremely disappointing, very very chewy and not in a good way, only thing in it that was good were the vegetables. The only decent thing that we tried were the potato cakes compared to the others. I found that it had no flavor but I mean what can really go wrong with potato’s. Overall very disappointing, total 4/10 only reason why we didn’t feel extremely disappointed was that the portions were large and the prices...
