Ravintola Kalatori — Restaurant in Rauma sub-region

The Finnish name of this restaurant literally means "fish market"; same as the street. I ordered the steak main dish. I loved the faint garlic taste in my steak; "medium" was done to perfection. My man-in-the-house ordered fish "ahven" and he gave it 4 out of 5 stars (which is very high by Finnish standards) for the display and taste. We loved the service too. Tips: 1. When you enter the restaurant, go straight to the counter on your left (the counter to your right is for the hotel check-in). 2. For young kids, there is a lovely play area next to the WC. 3. Great food and really good and fast service on a weekend in high season. Local produce and ingredients are allowed to shine and a lot of emphasis seems to be placed on simplicity of flavours and preparations. The menu is limited, which is absolutely a good thing. I especially enjoyed the take on a Finnish classic of kesäkeitto, absolutely fresh and creamy. The fish both for the starters and mains were perfectly cooked, with just the right amount of sauce. The location is not inspiring - the lobby of Hotel Vanha Rauma - but the food and service are excellent. It’s always a good sign when the menu is short, and Kalatori offers three starters, three mains and two desserts. We tried all three of the mains over two nights and were impressed by all of them.
