Le Chastel — Restaurant in Aix-en-Provence

Despite a very good food, the behaviour of the staff and boss is unacceptable. We were a table of 9 people coming during a business trip. First, the waiter took the liberty to upsell what we originally ordered : open a second bottle of wine without asking, brought a mojito that had been canceled & brought still water without request (we got that one removed from the bill as we told him we didn't order it). Then, the boss got at our table to tell us that our wine choice wasn't adequate with the main course. After explaining our taste in wines, he just despised us implying we didn't know anything on wines (even though it's true, not really something you should let your customers think). Finally, before leaving we went to see him to congratulate him on the food but specifying that we didn't appreciated how he talked to us. He replied : "I don't give a **" (no kidding -- proper words). From there he started being aggressive, telling us we shouldn't have come to his restaurant if we weren't able to pay 2-3 additional euros for something (funny when we payed more than 60 per person). Hello tourists! I came here as a tourist with my little dog in special dog bag without reservation. I came to France for a gastrotour. I tried to make a reservation with a waiter who told me: «go to the cashier and pay for a reservation ”. Then waiter said: “i remember you, come here in 30 min” when i asked for a toilet waiver said:”ok, leave it clean “ WHAT????? I waited near the restaurant 45 min and waiter proceeded only with local people. I really was offensed with words about toilet and paying for a booking, finally he didn’t let me in. And I didn’t eat here. This kind of rudeness was something special for me!!

Beautiful restaurant! I had a nice pasta dish with truffles that was good and well served. I only wish our waiter hadn’t been quite so involved in our visit. At times he was just a tad bit too much in his efforts to be accommodating and chatty. The tapenade arrived well after our wine came and as soon as I spread one crostini, our main dishes came and the tapenade was whisked away. My dining partner didn’t even get any!

The cafe gourmand was huge! Definitely a dish to share.

We got to the restaurant at opening time and it was jammed packed in no time with people waiting outside - and this on a weeknight! So, think ahead and reserve.
