Great little bistro in the centre of Bidart where we had dinner last night.

Arrived just before 19.00 for our booking at 19.00 and we’re asked to wait outside!! Slightly poor start as we’d arrived at 18.53 so not sure I would class as that early!!!!

When seated, we were presented a menu in English (didn’t ask if we wanted it in French) and so we chose from this. Only afterwards did we realise there was a specials board - which we weren’t offered. It was all in French so they’d assumed we wouldn’t understand it!!! Starter of prawns followed by Octopus or Iberico pork shoulder were therefore overlooked.

Anyway the meal was good and matched the majority of reviews. We shared a platter of local jambon and cheese with tomato bread. Jambon was rich and flavourful while cheese was delightful. Tomato bread was served DIY with the crisp toast and tomatoes separate - ok but not traditional and meant it felt a bit “dry”. Olives were very piquant - lovely.

Main was a shared Cote de Boeuf which we asked to be cooked medium. Have a look at the photos - I think a good vet could have gotten it mooing again!! But we’re in France and from experience - you can ask for it cooked the way you want it and the chef will always do it their way! Viva la France!!! It was very flavourful but too rare for my wife and a bit much even for me.

Wine was lovely - plenty of fruit and very good value. House selection of deserts was Crème Brûlée, Chocolate Brownie and Tiramisu - plus ice cream and crumble topping. All top class.

The food was good but the overall experience was ruined by our main waitress (she was the older lady, the younger one was super nice and communicative unfortunately she was not always serving us :() they didn’t book us in though we could demonstrate when we called them on the phone. They agreed to seat us but were chaotic in handling the situation which could have been a genuine oversight. Our main waitress came to take our order, when we explained that we weren’t ready because it was difficult to see the board / it was in an odd angle, she just turned around and didn’t come to take our order till the young one came..... she was grumpy throughout the evening, which ruined...
