Driving into Bordeaux and had a sudden yearning for Vietnamese Food…
Spotted Anh on GoogleMaps with its very high rating…and so glad we stopped in for dinner (and rang their door bell to ask for a table).
Operated out of the main level of their house, we enjoyed the evening outside on their charming terrace while watching the food be prepared.
Dinner was incredible:
Tapas starters contained probably the best spring rolls I’ve ever had, together with a special ‘crepe’ that was clean tasting and delicious. The delicate lemongrass sauce accompanying the vegetable wonton was also knockout.
Mains were equally as good, we had the Thit Kho, and the Bún Chà. Both were delicious but I would order the Thit Kho again in a heartbeat…slow cooked melt-in-the-mouth chucks of pork.
Service was attentive, welcoming, and very kind to our attempts at French! Excellent aperitifs and wines by the glass.
We were fortunate to speak to Anh on leaving. We know both your mum and daughter must be very proud to have their name over the door.

Mais dès le vestibule, je fus saisi par cette bouffée indescriptible d'odeurs mijotées et d'émotions enfouies. J'entrai de nouveau dans la cuisine de ma mère, vietnamienne oubliée, française adoptée. Tous ces petites casseroles, marmites, fait-touts où mijottent des indescriptibles mélanges de viandes et de légumes, qui subiront l'assaut et l'enrobage des épices si délicates, des liqueurs robustes qui s'enfonceront définitivement dans votre mémoire. Anh ne fait pas de la cuisine gastronomique académique. Elle ne suit pas des recettes compilées dans de grimoires anciens, transmis de mère en fille. Non, elle fouille sa mémoire d'enfant, extirpe des souvenirs, des moments, des temps passés, des fulgurances oubliées mais inscrits en elle, à la recherche de ces émotions qui reconstruisent tout un monde perdu. Mais elle réussit à chaque tour de baguettes, à chaque goutte de soja ou de nuoc mam, à chaque poignée de rau ram, de pérille ou de coriandre à retrouver les goûts et les parfums de son enfance. A chaque reconstruction d'un plat, insatisfaite, elle fignole, polit sa saveur, compare ses émotions. La cuisine de sa maman m'a traversé, a fait ressurgir mon passé, mon enfance, a fait revivre ma mère et mes ancêtres.
