La Maison d'Italie — Restaurant in Caen

GREAT FOOD, VALUE FOR MONEY, AND BEYOND EXCELLENT SERVICE. I stayed in Caen for a week and this was by far the best meal and restaurant experience I had! In fact, I'd probably say this was one of the best visits to any restaurant, Caen or elsewhere, I've had. The set menu was reasonably priced, and unlike most places I ate included three courses rather than two. The food was of good quality, and everything I ate tasted fantastic (especially the chocolate mousse - I'd recommend!). I'd have given both the value for money and food quality five stars, but the service deserved several more stars. Efficient, polite and welcoming would be how I'd describe it. We were seated quickly, and our orders taken shortly after. Our waiter appreciated our lack of English and was perfect in dealing with it (major selling point for British and Irish visitors - the menu has full English translation and all the waiters spoke good enough English to get through the meal comfortably). My French is limited to asking for a table for two, indicating the set menu, requesting a jug of tap water and asking for the bill. This, and the waiters very good English meant that everything went smoothly from walking in the door until leaving. Every other restaurant I've visited in Caen has one or two members of staff who can speak okay English, but here the waiters English was enough to even joke about how quickly my Dad and I ate the bread on our table (which was replaced so quickly I questioned whether he was a wizard able to conjour it from thin air). Je me demande si ils ont déjà mis les pieds en Italie , pour le coup nous en sommes très loin et bien réellement à Caen . Pour commencer j’ai réservé via Instagram comme le site indique la prise de rdv internet ( pas de réponde par mail je suis donc passé par Instagram ) réponse immédiate et comfirmation pour 8 . Nous arrivons et la surprise personne ne trouve notre réservation et nous avons la réflexion que soit disant une personne n’avais pas noté donc qu’il ne pouvais pas deviner .. cela les a déranger de dresser une table pour 8 couvert … au vue de l’état du restaurant je pense qu’il aurait du se réjouir car ça ne doit pas arriver souvent …. Ensuite la serveuse ingrate est venue demander les plat à commander et à fait une remarque + que raciste qui a choqué l’ensemble de la tablé je cite

We visited La Maison d’Italie on our last night in Caen, and it was a truly lovely experience. The service was excellent from start to finish — warm, welcoming, and attentive.

One of our sons is autistic and became very upset (with tears) when his pizza had seasoning. Without hesitation and with total kindness, the staff cooked him another pizza exactly as he needed it — no fuss, no questions, just genuine care and understanding. It meant the world to us and turned a tricky moment into a really positive one.

The food was also delicious — proper Italian cooking in a relaxed and friendly setting. We left feeling full, happy, and very grateful.
