AU COQ D'OR — Restaurant in Calais

Come if you want to be yelled at by old French men. I came by for lunch and waited at the counter as staff bustled by with trays of moules frites. After a while an older man at the counter finally growled under his breath in French that there are no tables and the restaurant next door is better. Not sure who he was or why he was at the counter of the restaurant.

The restaurant next door looked eerie and empty so I decided to go outside and try to find another place online. One of the patio tables with more old, grumpy French men kept yelling at me asking what I'm doing here and what do I want (for you to leave me alone, obviously). They were simultaneously slow but also surly, a fascinatingly unpleasant combo. The man from the counter came back to try to get me to go to the creepy restaurant next door to eat.

I later picked another restaurant down the street and the counter guy appeared at the table next to me, at the new restaurant, a few minutes later, scoffed, and started smoking a cigarette right next to me. He left before ordering so apparently just came to harass me??

I'd say it was an ok Boomer moment but I think they were ancient enough to be the surly absentee fathers who raised...

Having read reviews of a place a few doors up we intended to go there but this turned out tom be closed and so we found Au Coq d'Or by chance.

It was a bright, cold and blowy January day outside but the restaurant was warm and welcoming. The reasonably priced set menu was excellent value; the shared appetiser was a gorgeous combo of shrimps, crab with bread and was a starter in itself. The staff were friendly and gave very good service and by the end of our meal we were really happy the other place had...

Attitude du patron désagréable. Nous avons voulu changer nos habitudes de calaisiens en allant dans un établissements que nous ne connaissions pas. Nous avons très bien mangé. Les moules étaient très bonnes ainsi que la pièce de viande. Idem pour les desserts. Le serveur a été très pro au niveau de l'accueil et des renseignements concernant la carte. La serveuse et le jeune apprenti ont eux aussi été très bien. Dommage que l'accueil du patron ait vraiment été au raz des pâquerettes. Nous avons eu le malheur de demander au serveur une table pour 2, sans bouquet de fleurs (des lys blancs magnifiques mais aussi très odorants et pour manger ce n'est peut être pas le plus approprié). Nous avons eu le droit de la part du patron (alors que le serveur nous faisait des propositions de tables ) à "il y a des places sur la terrasse". C'était une remarque valable même si la température extérieure n'était pas des plus clémente. Puis un "si vous voulez, je peux vous mettre des fleurs en plastique qui viennent du cimetière" que l'on peut considérer comme une plaisanterie. Mais lorsque une fois à table nous l'avons entendu dire à son personnel "ça ne réserve pas et ça à des exigences" (je précise qu'il était 19h30 donc ce n'était pas le coup de feu), je vous assure que je n'ai rien dit pour ne pas gâcher la soirée de ma femme mais qu'il s'en est fallu de peu pour que nous quittions ce restaurant. Une chose est sûre, nous ne l'embêterons plus avec nos "exigences" puisque nous ne...
