Hippopotamus Steakhouse — Restaurant in Les Andelys

Our waiter was very nice and spoke good English but for some reason the request for a medium rare steak didn't get to the cook. The image on the menu is of a steak cooked medium rare, then sliced. What I received was half a dozen slices of steak that had been cooked (or more likely re cooked) as slices. Absolutely no chance of these coming anything other than over. In actual fact it tasted good, and wasn't that tough so, originally, it was probably a decent bit of meat. My wife enjoyed her salmon and the house wine was very good indeed but, for a chain that promotes itself as a meat specialist, the cooking has to be right. I regretted not going for a the basic entrecote but then saw this at the table next to us and that too bore no resemblance (size or thickness) to the images on the menu. The place however, was virtually full, and 90% local which I find surprising (I suppose it is a relatively cheap option but €19.90 for 8 small slices of beef and some fries is not good value IMO). Je n'ai pas l'habitude de m'exprimer sur mes avis en terme de restauration, mais je vais faire une exception !

Ma moitié et moi avons profité d'un magnifique repas hier soir. Ma compagne a pris en entrée, un excellent œuf poché avec une délicieuse sauce chorizo Suivi d'un jambon braisé succulent et pour finir une mousse au chocolat maison. De mon côté, j'ai profité du haché original, une immense pièce de bœuf haché au goût incroyable ! Pour finir sur une brioche façon pain perdu.

Pour être sincère, je m'attendais à des produits surgelés vu qu'il s'agit d'une chaîne de restaurants. Mais j'ai été détrompé par le goût et la qualité des produits, mais aussi par notre gentille serveuse Louane. Elle nous a expliqué que tous les produits étaient frais, d'origine française et fait maison !

En parlant de Louane, son service à été un sans-faute, elle était très prévenante et à notre écoute... Une personne d'une grande empathie et très gentille, encore une fois.

Je ne saurai trop recommander ce restaurant, FONCEZ ! FONCEZ MANGER DANS CE RESTAURANT ! Vous ne le regretterez pas.

Toutefois prévoyez le budget avant de vous y rendre. La qualité des produits et du services justifient amplement les prix un peu élevé... Mais par les temps actuels les prix ne sont pas forcément adaptés à tous les budgets.

They had no problem greeting our group of 10 people with a short notice. Everything tasted great. The only issue was that one of the steak was supposed to be rear but came medium. They quickly solved that. They also didn’t have any problem saying what allergens were in each dish (eggs, milk etc). Was happy to see two options of dessert (other than sorbet) that didn’t contain eggs! Would have loved it more to see one without milk as my mum is...
