We had planned to stay at our family home but last minute this wasn't possible. Having visited Loches for more years than I care to remember we checked into the George Sand last minute-first mistake we were charged £115 per night for the very archaic family room- almost double the advertised rate. To say the room was tired and dated would be an understatement room 110 has shower taps virtually hanging off the wall, damp mouldy ceiling, wallpaper also hanging off, cracked tiles and also not 100% clean to be honest. The bedroom had a charming view out over ancient Loches and the bed was comfortable and the bed linen and towels all clean. The decor in the room has been given zero thought mismatched beds and side tables, main double bed no headboard at all. A plethora of random floor lamps and a gigantic TV partially obscuring the beautiful stone carved fireplace and then random tables galore. This hotel has so much historic charm that is not being capitalised on. It would appear that some of the hotel has undergone restoration (not room 110) but the restoration is not sympathetic nor charming. Strangely the front of the hotel now boasts a monochrome washroom left open to the reception -odd and then there are black disco themed toilet and also horrid cheap modern black doors to hotel rooms. The staff are pleasant and the views out the back are good. If I had paid £60 a room probably wouldn't moan but would definitely not stay again. The selling point of this hotel is its location and its period features which I hope the restoration does not obliterate. To be honest ordinarily I would not have stayed here we were a bit stuck and usually I would have left such a shabby offering but as it was only two nights we stayed. I am normally a bath person but the bathroom was so shabby and horrid I showered both days. Plus points the bar and restaurant area and staircase are all charming and I know the food in the restaurant is meant...
