I used to like this place and went there every week for bread. And I used to recommend this place to all my friends coming to Marseille for visits. However, my last experience here proved me wrong.
It was early in the morning after after the bakery was open. There was only me and another girl in front of me shopping in the bakery. As the girl before me was paying, one staff came to take my order. My French was not very good so I used English: “ I want one pain pan and two croissants thank you”, while using French pronunciation for “pain pan” and “croissant” for them to better understand. The staff took my order and waited next to the cashier. This is where everything started to go wrong. When he was telling the cashier of my order, he was miming what I said and emphasising my English and French hybrid order: “ONE pain pan, TWO croissants”. They were both laughing at his miming. I started to feel uncomfortable. I was the only customer at the time.
After I had paid, I started to go outside and I heard them laughing behind me. I felt even more uncomfortable and looked back at them in a confused look. They stoped laughing when I was looking at me. After I turned around again, they laughed even louder. Even when I walked outside, they were still laughing very loudly.
I was a bit angry, went back inside, and asked them what they were laughing at. They looked a bit panicked and said they were not laughing at me. I said I had seen the staff miming what I said before and they denied. Another staff came, and denied his collègue ever making fun of me. Below are the reasons he gave: most of their clients speak English so they would not make fun of people speaking English; his coworker did not speak English so he could not have mimed me; their job is hard so they spent the day laughing at things.
They refused to apologise...
Read moreI would love to write a good review about this bakery, since I have been here several times and generally liked their breads. However: I just went there an hour ago, and the guy working at the counter tried to rip me off by charging 6,50 euros for a ciabatta (220g), that is in fact 6.50 euros per kilo! When I pointed out the 'error', he mumbled something about the 'system broken'... now the truth is: nobody working at a bakery would confuse a kilo price for an item price, especially when he's pretending to use the scales to check the price. so there are only two options: the guy was acting by himself, ripping off 'tourists' and cash in the money for himself, which would mean he's not the sort of staff you want working there as an employer. the guy did this in the 'interest of the bakery', which would make the bakery a tourist trap. therefore I suggest: stay away from this place. Marseille is full of amazing, friendly, little bakeries. no need to go to this...
Read moreThe croissants are incredible! They are beautifully laminated with a crunchy exterior and a delicious flavor. The front of house person helping us was very kind and patient with my bad French despite the shop being very busy. He suggested we try the chocolate financiers and the kouignette which were also very good. I definitely want to go back to try the pain au chocolat and to get another croissant. If you plan on going, I would recommend getting your pastries to go as it is very hot in the shop due to the...
