Many times, a consistently highly rated restaurant on google and TripAdvisor is something that generates a great deal of cynicism for me. Sur le pouce, however, served me one of the best meals of my life. Whilst the appearance of the restaurant from the outside and the interior decor may leave a little to be desired, it is clear that all effort that may have been spared in aesthetic has been pumped into the food. My girlfriend and I went to sur le pouce two nights in a row, and I was not disappointing. I had the Tunisian tagine which whilst melding a variety of flavours from each item, still maintained a clarity of flavour and I left extremely full and happy. There is a wide array of deserts as well as delicious mint tea to enjoy after the main meal, but the real delights are in the main courses. The food is always delivered within 5 minutes of ordering and there is a wide variety of dishes; however, there was only one vegetarian cous-cous option which was a little disappointing for my girlfriend. That said, it's more her own fault for not being able to enjoy the entirety of the restaurant. Above all, this restaurant was extremely cheap: the most expensive dish was 11 euros, with many of them ranging from 6-9, and no service charge is offered. Marseilles is full of tourist traps, and luckily, this isn't one of them. I very much doubt that I will ever return to Marseilles, and so, on my deathbed, I imagine that when i come face to face with my own mortality, and have to wonder if I had any regrets, the only answer will be that I didn't get to try everything on the menu at...

The friendly staff tried there best to explain what each dish was. Even with a French speaker among us this took some gesting and guessing. It all became even more exciting as we stared devoure the spicy sauce that comes with the bread - what have we gotten ourself into!?
When the food arrives it is in tremendous amount. We eat and enjoy ourselfs, the both new and familiar flavors, all in an interior that tells us that they have focused on the food.
When I order a dessert, it tastes as chilled, dense washing rinse - later reveled to be orange flowers boiled in milk. A truly amazing experience to get the opportunity to eat something that you previously haven't only smelled!
When I get the check I almost feel ashamed that we are not charged more for such an exquisite...
Read moreAfter a long journey by bus from Barcelona, we arrived in Marseille absolutely famished. Sur Le Pouce was our first opportunity to break our bus ride fast. The situation was more of a hunger emergency than a care-free meal out. As we sat down we were ready to eat just about anything, and given our lack of experience with Tunisian food we weren’t quite sure what to order. So we did the smart thing and we ordered everything. Plates started arriving; a delicious bed of couscous with lemon, a whole fish grilled and deliciously seasoned, boiled chicken and farmers sausage. A plate of fiery peppers were a cautious attraction. Everything was elegantly presented and brimming with flavor. What luck to have such an amazing meal right off the bus...
