My family lived in Beaulieu for decades and my parents favourite restaurant was La Pignatelle. They loved the welcome, the warmth of the place, the classic food.... they are now both gone and I live in the UK. But we do come back every so often, and yesterday took a memory trip to the restaurant. Wow. What a difference. What was once a home from home feel has become sleek and contemporary. We were welcomed warmly and shown to a choice of tables. From then, we were charmed and had one of the best meals I remember in ages. They have kept a few dishes of old so I tried the bone marrow starter which was as fantastic as all those years ago, the marrow roasted just lightly with garlic toast and a little sharply dressed salad to boot, the perfect foil to all that richness.. My wife went for the gourmet mealoption ( a real snip at 30 euros for 3 very fine courses) and her risotto starter was divine. Creamy, white as snow, with still a very slight bite and a lovely manliness of cheese. The service was unobtrusive and professional, asking if we needed more of anything and ensuring we were happy with everything. The restaurant speciality is sauces and I love the idea of tailoring different sauces to each dish. I had the veal sauce Normandy but I could have had it milanese or with a gorgonzola sauce or a red pepper and chorizo cream. I decided to go with chef's recommendation and I wasn't disappointed. Tender melt in the mouth veal with a light cream sauce packed with fresh mushrooms lightly cooked. My wife's fish was equally gorgeous cooked beautifully. We both loved the 'rappels de sauce' which were extra sauce boats of what we both had. Absolutely amazing. We had to have a dessert. My wife's pain perdu was utterly delightful, slices of soft baguette and brioche in a custard bake with extra custard to pour. If I am going to be extra critical my rum baba could have used a bit more rum, I didn't really taste much of that in there. But the baba cake itself was a triumph. 3 courses, 1 half rose bottle and coffee came to just 95 euros. At that level of cookery and professionalism it is a small price to pay in this part of the world where, often, tourists are treated a little too casually. Absolutely recommended and high praise to...
Read moreVery disappointed ! ! ! Do not waste money checking this out unless they improve on The Chef. The two serving staff were welcoming and professional, but the quality of the food was very below par. The menu as the restaurant stated was traditional but not well executed. I ordered 3 tempura prawns which arrived in a soft thick batter. Grilled sardines were tiny fillets totally swamped by a mountain of salad leaves. My main was a pink duck breast with Clementine sauce, simple choice but the fat was white, not rendered, the duck served cold, when I advised the staff they just microwaved my plate! Oh and by the way the essence of Clementine was totally absent. My husband ordered pink lamb cutlets which tasted ok but weren't served pink. So to traditional France I hope this restaurant is a dying breed, you can and do so...
