Rumah Bali — Restaurant in Nice

I have been to Bali many times and know the flavors of this South East Asian archipelago well. So here I am in Nice in the South of France and I am instantly transported to Bali once again. The friendly smile of the owner as she greeted us as is the custom of the Balinese. We shared the Lumpia but added to the sauce accompaniment a delectable sumbal a traditional chili paste. My wife had the Nasi Goreng and upon my first taste I could have been in Ubud or Uluwatu but without the lingering fragrance of the frangipani in the warm evening air. My own Rendang which has been described by chefs around the world as the king of curries carried the exciting flavors that make it so renowned. The beef slow cooked in coconut milk to perfection. The refreshing cocktails of citrus and passion fruit were a delightful palate cleanser. An amazing dining experience far from its home yet true to its culture. Et ce n'est pas étonnant : fraîcheur des produits, présentation et goûts authentiques de la cuisine de l'île des Dieux (parfumée, souvent surprenante, parfois épicée mais très variée et colorée, à l'image du melting-pot ethnique de l'île) sont au rendez-vous. Croustillants Lumpia (des rouleaux de feuille de brick frits, fourrés aux légumes, vermicelles et poulet, sauce cacahuète), brochettes satay ayam délicieuses, traditionnel et copieux nasi-goreng, kuri parfumé et relevé...même les desserts (ce n'est pas toujours le cas en Asie) méritent un détour.

Plus un accueil souriant et délicat avec toute la gentillesse et le savoir-vivre balinais ! En outre, les prix sont raisonnables.

Alors que demander de plus? Pas grand chose, en fait : de la musique balinaise en fond sonore, une carte des boissons aussi authentique que les plats (Arak à l'apéritif, bière Bintang et vins (Hatten wines, Sababay winery) ... car oui, depuis quelques décennies, Bali est la seule région viticole d'Indonésie ! Plus quelques références de blancs d'Alsace, dont l'élégance se marie très bien avec ces saveurs (par exemple les Crémants, Sylvaner et Riesling vieilles vignes du domaine Gueth à Guebershwir), ou encore les étonnants blancs et rosés de Provence du domaine du Dragon à Draguignan. Sans oublier les surprenants pétillants, blancs et rosés du tout proche vignoble niçois de Bellet (en particulier ceux du Domaine de la Source, restés à prix raisonnables).

Peut-être aussi que le Petit Bali soit ouvert aussi le samedi ! Et pourquoi pas, y proposer des cours de cuisine balinaise ainsi qu'un peu d'épicerie pour les amateurs?

Enfin, à noter que le nombre de table est réduit : il est donc conseillé...

My favourite meal in the whole of France and it was Balinese! I travelled to Bali in 2017 and the second I smelled the Balinese incense at Rumah Bali and saw the artefacts in the restaurant I was transported back there. The owners are SO lovely and the food is DELICIOUS. Proper Balinese flavours and spice. I had a really good vegetarian curry (I asked for spicy and it was perfect) and a Balinese mango sticky rice with cashews for pudding which was really good. I loved chatting to the woman who owns the restaurant about my Bali trip and showed her some photos. It was truly a beautiful evening. I...
