Le Retro — Restaurant in Papeete

i had about six hours to kill in papeete due to a late flight back to LA, and found myself desiring lunch roundabout midday, as one tends to.

i perused a few local spots, and decided to try Le Retro out - reasonably crowded, but not too much so, equipped with misters to help keep cool (the water kind, not the male human kind, though those were there too.)

i settled on the tuna poke, having been deprived of that very thing by brasserie des remparts the night prior.

Le Retro did not disappoint. i ordered a 50cl hinano blonde and my tuna poke, and both were delivered to me with an almost alarming quickness. the poke was fresh and quite amazing, and the hinano served to wash it down nicely.

i was able to enjoy both items in quite a leisurely manner, taking some time to enjoy people watching on the quite comfortable patio seating area.

this would be a great place for a group meal, right next to the water, with amazing food, and really friendly staff.

i might not be in papeete ever again, but if i am, i will most certainly...

Definitely do not recommend eating here!!! Food was terrible. Worst on the island. Ordered a recommendation chicken sandwich ($20 sandwich) it was the worst one I’ve had in my life. I also took my second bite and had a huge bone in my mouth. There’s better places to eat on the island for sure. We just went here because everything else was closed. This might be a good spot for drinks just not food. It was dark meat and the egg was slimy with no flavor or spice, the whole thing had nothing on it actually. Juice was good but I’m sure it was from a carton. We got the crème brûlée thinking that would be better. No ); it was the worst one I ever had. I had to spit it out. I’ve never done that with a desert before. It was really bad.

Wi-Fi also lasted 30 mins. I asked for it before I ordered and they didn’t give it to me and walked away, so I asked someone else because I needed it to translate and she barley gave it to me and wasn’t the nicest server. Don’t...

Le service c’été horrible !! Estuve en Marzo del 2019 y con mi amiga decidimos ir a comer entre varios restaurantes que habían en Papeete, vimos la carta y como fue nuestra primera salida decidimos probar el restaurant, además que vimos varías personas y pensamos que no era una mala decisión. Al sentarnos en la terraza no nos habíamos percatado que había gente fumando y comer con aroma a cigarro no es lo mejor, por lo que con Daniela decidimos de entrar a penas alguien nos viniera a atender comentárselo... Al rato llega una mujer y nos dice en un tono media apresurada ( no había tanta gente y 4 garzones más, por lo que yo pensaba que no era su mejor día, aún así fuimos muy tranquilos con ella, no así ella con nosotros ) y le dije en francés que quería agua, pero luego al percatarme que había jugo lo cambié ( soy Chileno, pero hablo súper bien el francés) y me dice ah? Y le vuelvo a repetir! Y dice ahh jugo... y yo (?) Mi amiga no pidió nada ya se sentía incómoda. Le comenté que nos cambiaríamos por la gente fumando y nos movió las manos como diciendo hagan lo que quieran ( era muy mal educada) al cambiarnos le pedimos la clave de wifi, tenían unos papelitos con código y ella me trajo 4 cuando en verdad es uno por persona, no sé si porque se dio cuenta que había sido muy descortés con nosotros o simplemente porque hace malas prácticas... al llegar la comida mi amiga que además es Chef en Queenstown, Nueva Zelanda de un restaurant muy bueno, me comenta que el pescado está seco, el arroz malo y que lo único que estaba valiendo la pena era el wifi y mi compañía yo a diferencia de ella me gustó el « poisson cru au lait de coco« Había un chico que rescato de esta “experiencia” que fue que nos ofreció palomitas de maíz saladas mientras esperábamos la comida y siempre tuvo una sonrisa... Cuando llegó el momento de pagar lo hicimos en una cuenta y con tarjeta, nos había salido casi 7.000 XPF unos 66 usd y eso que mi amiga no había bebido nada. Solo nos fuimos porque ya habíamos comido y queríamos caminar y olvidar a esa mujer mala persona... pero llegó un momento en que nos preguntamos porque tan Caro todo si habían sido dos platos de nos más de 20 usd cada uno... claro ella no nos dio la boleta y tampoco y ahí fue cuando nos entró la duda y decidimos volver a pedir la boleta, cuando la pedimos la mujer se enojó, yo le dije que había cobrado un agua grande cuando yo no la había tomado, sacó ella de su bolsillo 5 usd y me los tiró, le dije que no quería los 5 usd porque el agua era menos que eso y que solo quería los Francos que debían ser y de nuevo con sus malos modales nos hace como “shu shu allez allez” aludiendo a que nos fuéramos, después de eso nos fuimos, jamas amargados porque andábamos de vacaciones y felices pero esa mujer con sus malas prácticas no llegará...
