I was hesitant to buy anything as there were wasps on quite a few of the sweet treats. Although not as unhygienic as flies, wasps can still make people with weak immune systems sick if they've previously landed on rotting fruit/flesh. I pointed out the wasps and the person who worked there didn't care and shrugged and indicated that they were inevitable. This is not true (went to a different boulangerie straight after with my friend who can eat gluten and no wasps).
After making the effort to come all the way here, I bit the bullet and got two things...a caramel éclair and the olive foccacia. The choux paste tasted amazing but I hated the filling (not fresh cream or caramel flavoured like I expected) so I only took a couple of bites. I wish they'd just had a normal chocolate éclair.
The olive foccacia tasted like one of my least favourite gluten free supermarket bread brands - dry and insipid - with some kalamata olives baked into it. I had to both heat it and use copious amount of butter for it to taste okay. It was expensive for such a disappointing experience. Maybe I tried the wrong things - the sucre bread looked good.
Also, I knew from a guide not to expect croissants etc but it would be nice and it certainly is possible as other gluten free...
Read moreHuge disappointment, after getting a taxi all the way here due to the great reviews and sheer amount of gluten free options.
On arrival, and previous to coming I'd hoped to get the Soup and something deal. So I asked the lady, which took us several moments of conversing until she said there was no soup... when it was only 11am and the menu on the side clearly stated Sandwich + Soup/Sandwich + Salad.
Her miserable and unwelcoming 'comportement' had already made me feel like I wasn't supposed to be there. As someone who suffers medically as a result of gluten foods, and was feeling a little unwell a little compassion as a customer would have been quite nice. But perhaps it's because my french is very bad, and I needed to speak in english. I had a sandwich, and my boyfriend had nothing as the vegetarian sandwich was unidentifiable orange smooshy veg with some goats cheese and horseradish. not the best for 6 euros.
travelling a distance to spend money at this establishment was a bit of a waste of time. I'm not saying it's the worst ever, it looks very nice.. perhaps if you're in the area and they actually have what's on the menu. It could be quite nice, just don't go out of your way, or expect to...
Read moreGreat gluten-free bakery with vegan options!
I was surprised when I discovered Chambelland by chance recently. The bakery offers a lot of vegan options like their signature selection of pain au sucre as well as a tarte aux pommes, cookie, banana cake and chocolate bread.
I bought a pain au sucre with orange and chocolate which was very tasty. The texture was chewy and full of flavor. Almost more like a cake than a bread. I also bought the vegan cookie which was good.
It is impressive what they are able to achieve to create keeping it vegan and without gluten. I’m very impressed!
As a little anecdote the person serving me explained that they introduced the pain au sucre because it is impossible to create good viennoiserie without gluten. So the pain au sucre is their answer to having a gluten free alternative to these French classics.
I would say they...
